Guide to Buying the Best Air Pump

Guide to choosing the best pump for inflatables

There are plenty of air pumps on the market, and you practically need to be an artist to find one that suits your needs. Thanks to this in-depth guide, you’ll be able to find the best air pump to inflate your towable.

Why Use An Air Pump?

An air pump is indispensable to blow up inflatables, whether small or big. Here are the reasons you should get one.

  • It saves you time, effort, and nerves if you choose the right one, of course.
  • It allows you to inflate your towable indoor and outdoor in no time.
  • It’s easy to transport wherever you go.
  • Some can even fill up car tires, bicycles, or basketballs.

Most Popular and Reliable Brands

Although there are many good air pumps on the markets, it’s always better to choose one made from a well-known brand. This way, you are practically sure to get the best for your money. So when you look for an air pump, try to look for these companies:

  • Airhead
  • Intex
  • Wow World
  • Sanipoe
  • Sevylor
  • Rave Sport
  • Seamax
  • Serene Life
  • Eteckcity
  • MicroNovelti

Types of Air Pumps

There are several different kinds of air pumps such as electric, manual and double action. So you may want to know what differentiates them from each other.

Electric Air Pumps

Turbo Pump

These have a high volume of air capacity and come with croc clip connectors that attach right to a boat or car battery. Many of them also feature a special nozzle to deflate the towable to make it easy to store after use. Since these deliver high pressure, they do an excellent job of inflating larger towables. Also, they have different nozzles to suit various types of inflatable valves.

Medium Volume Pump

These are regular electric air pumps that deliver a medium volume of air. These plug into a boat or car socket, and they usually have a special feature to deflate the towable. These work well to air up small or medium inflatable but are not ideal for large towable as they aren’t powerful enough. These pumps also come with various nozzles to suit all sorts of inflatable valves.

Manual Air Pumps

Foot Air Pumps

As you may know, a foot pump is similar to a hand pump. The only difference here is you use your foot to blow up your inflatables. The great thing about this type of pump is that it doesn’t require you to bend and hurt your back. Since it’s compact, you can carry it anywhere. Like the hand pumps, these aren’t powerful enough to blow up big inflatables. However, it’s always good to have one as a backup in the back of your car.

Double Action Air Pumps

Double-action air pumps have the same look as classic hand pumps and function the same way. The difference with the double-action pump is that it continues to pump air, whether you press the handle down or lift it. This air pump is excellent for blowing up small pool toys, but it doesn’t provide enough pressure to inflate big towable.

Hand Air Pumps

Hand air pumps are the simplest to use but require more effort and time to blow bigger inflatables. They usually come in a cylindrical form, and the handle needs to be pushed down. That’s why it’s better to use them only for blowing up small pool toys. If this is what you need, make sure to choose one that has a handle and some straps to keep it in place with your foot.

Liter Per Minute

Liter per minute is the amount of air the pump can generate per minute. The greater amount of liters it can produce, the faster your towable items will inflate. Another feature worth looking out for is their functionality.

In general, there are two different models of electric air pumps – (one-stage and two-stage). The one-stage model will fill up your inflatable until it attains the required air pressure.

The two-stage model will pump up your inflatables at high volume, and in the second stage, it will release a higher amount of air pressure to cut down the inflation time. Just be aware that the more your electric air pump is powerful, the noisier it will be.

Auto Shut Off/On

Well-made electric air pumps will also have an auto shut off/on feature. This allows you to air up your inflatable without running the risk of overheating the pump. This auto-stop feature also prevents you from overinflating your items, whether it’s a basketball, tire, or towable.

Know that most electric air pumps give you the possibility to preset on any air pressure level you want it to be, and it will automatically turn off when it reaches that air level.

Some electric air pumps also come with an analog or digital pressure gauge. Both functionalities allow you to constantly check the level of air pressure while you inflate your items.

How Much PSI Do You Need to Inflate?

It depends on the size of the inflatable. A maximum of 1.5 PSI for small pool toys is usually recommended, and for bigger towable, like inflatable boats and kayaks, a maximum of 2.5 PSI. However, know that the PSI changes depending on the temperatures. In the heat, the PSI increases. In the cold, the PSI decreases. So suppose you inflate in hot weather, don’t fill up the inflatable completely. To make sure you aren’t overinflating or underinflating, it’s better to use a PSI gauge or a regulator. And no matter what, always check the instruction for the specific model you have.

Compatability

One of the best features of an air pump is the universal valve adaptor. It allows you to fit any nozzle size and blow up any type of inflatables ranging from pool toys, boats, air beds to rafts and many others.

Since it releases a high-pressure air stream, you can inflate big towable with a vast floating island. And if you want, you can even use it for inflatables that require less air pressure

.However, if you don’t use a universal adaptor, make sure your air pump is compatible with your inflatables’ pressure levels. Some air pumps won’t suit to inflate items such as car tires, basketballs, or bicycle tires.

Many pumps today come with different types of valves allowing you to use them for different pressure levels. The PSI range is also an important feature not to overlook. Always check the PSI that the air pump covers.

Nozzles

Nozzles are one of the most important pieces of the air pump because if they don’t fit the valve, you won’t be able to air up your inflatables. So make sure the nozzles that come with the pump suit the openings.

In general, most air pumps include 3, 4, or 5 different nozzles. Some even come with a special attachment to deflate the towable.

Portability

When going to the beach or wherever you want to carry your air pump comfortably. That’s why it’s important to look for one that is lighweight, compact, and that has a handle so that you can bring it anywhere you go without tiring yourself.

High-Pressure Vs. High Volume

You may already be familiar with the term high volume and high pressure. If you are not, it would be best to know the difference between both models to help you make the best decision.

A high-volume pump can release a high amount of air into the inflatables, allowing it to blow very quickly. The problem with those pumps is that most of them aren’t able to withstand high pressure.

They will air up your inflatables, but not completely. This means you’ll have to continue the work with a manual air pump. With high-pressure pumps, it’s the opposite. They can handle high-pressure levels, but they take longer to inflate items.

Valves

Before purchasing an air pump, it’s essential to check the type of valve your inflatables and towable have. There are many valves, but the most used on inflatables are pinch valves, military valves, and Boston valves.

So first, know what type of valve you use and then choose an air pump with nozzles that suit the valves.

If you already bought an air pump and didn’t have the proper nozzles, don’t panic. You can fix the issue by purchasing an adapter online or offline.

Power Source

The most popular electric air pumps are the ones that have a common power source to use indoor and outdoor.

For example, a 12V air pump usually includes a DC adaptor to plug into the car or boat and an AC adaptor with 110-120 volts to plug into the wall of your house.

But not all air pumps include those adaptors, some need to be plugged into outlets. So this is something you’ll have to check when you choose one.

Cord Length

The cord needs to be long enough so that you don’t feel restricted to inflate your towable, whether indoor or outdoor. Some air pumps have a long cord, while others have shorter ones.

However, if you buy an air pump and the cable is too short, you can get an extension cord.

But before you do so, make sure the extension suits your pump electric cord, as some draw a lot of power.

Price

The rate of air pumps varies depending on the type, brand, and other factors. But, if you take time to do some researches and read reviews of customers, you’ll be able to find an air pump that works well for you and that suits your budget. High quality and reliable air pump will serve you for a long time. However, if you buy a cheap air pump, it can cost you more in the long run.

Warranty

It’s better to buy an air pump from a brand that offers one year warranty or 90-day money-back guarantees.

In case something happens, you know you are covered.

So always make sure the company is generous and provides good customer service.

Final Words

With this list and buying guide of the top air pumps, you should be able to find one that meets your expectations. As you can see on the list, the best rated is the AGPTEK air pump because it has both the regular electrical 110 plugs and the car adapter, and not to mention the price is excellent. Even though the Intex Quick-Fill doesn’t feature any DC adaptor, it’s still the top pick because it’s easy to use, blows up inflatable fast, and is of high quality.

  3. Hi and thanks for sharing this. I have an AGPTek pump that we use for inflatable mattresses, but I also have a foot pump and a hand pump. In fact, I would always recommend not relying on any one of these as I find there are often problems. One of the problems I find with the foot pump is that because you can’t hold it and operate it at the same time unless you have a very willing helper, it is easy for the nozzle to come off while you are pumping. That is an advantage of the hand pump and the electric pump. With both of those, you can hold the nozzle firmly onto the inflatable while you are inflating. I’ve often had the situation that this is the only way to get the nozzle to stay on while pumping. I have found this to be one of the most frequent and annoying problems. If the nozzle isn’t a perfect fit then it just doesn’t inflate. I am curious though. Don’t you think that many of the parts for these pumps must come from the same factory and probably in China? they all look so similar and many of them overheat in use and have that same nasty high-pitched noise. Thanks, Andy

    • Hi Andy,

You are right, if the nozzles don’t fit, it won’t inflate the towable. Most products today are made in China, and while it’s true that many products from China are of poor quality, there are many products of excellent quality too. Even Apple produce their phones in China:)

  4. I have spent time trying to blow up inflatable pool toys by mouth. It is exhausting! An electric pump is definitely with it if you think you will be doing that often. I think getting one that emphasizes pressure over volume would be best. Are any of these pumps waterproof? Or do you just need to make sure to be in a completely dry environment to use them?

    • Hi Chase,

Thank you for passing by and for the comment! Yes, if you have lots of pool toys to air up, an air pump will be of good help:) Only the hand pump is waterproof; the electronic ones aren’t. I hope it helped. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you have questions. I am always willing to assist.

      Have a wonderful day!

  5. Thank you for this great article. I really like the Airhead high pressure pump, it is great with a 10 FT cord. Some of the pumps I have used in the past have these ridiculously short cords! I do have a question, is there a specific “runtime” for this pump? Some of the inflatables I have for the kids are HUGE and I am looking for something that can run for a bit without a break when it’s time to get out all of the water gear. Great article thanks!

    • Hi Jerry,

All these pumps will get warmer after several minutes of intense work. You’ll need to let it rest until its temperature gets back to normal.

I hope it helped. Please, let me know if you have more questions, I’ll be more than happy to help.
