This is the perfect suit for fast use when going on a boat trip or outdoor adventure. It’s made of nonwoven polypropylene material with patent bi-laminate technology and welded waterproof seams.

Guide to Buying Foul Weather Gear

Whether it’s for enjoying a short boat trip, venturing a few days out at sea, participating in a long ocean race, or going on an exciting boat ride around the world, you need the right foul weather gear to protect you from the element. Here is a buying guide to help you make the best choice for your needs.

Type of Foul Weather Gear

Offshore

Offshore foul weather gear is designed to wear in rough conditions at sea for an extended period (multi-days to weeks boat trips)

Therefore this type of gear withstands hard use and provides maximum protection to the boater. High competition Sailors often use this gear for trans-oceanic racing. The offshore foul weather gear is pretty expensive, but if you spend long weeks at sea almost all year round, it’s well worth the money.

Inshore

Coastal Foul Weather Gear is designed for practically anything, whether multi-day boating or getting around the dock. This type of gear is not as tough as offshore foul gear, but it’s durable and comfortable enough to wear for several days. However, if you opt for the coastal style, you’ll have to wear 2 to 3 layers underneath to keep you warm, as it has no insulation.

Day Sailing

This type of gear is specially designed for light to moderate wind, rain, and spray. For a day boat trip, it’s not necessary to wear pants or a salopettes; a jacket will suffice. However, since this type of foul weather gear is not insulated, you might consider wearing one or two layers underneath. Just make sure you still have room enough to move easily around when you are active.

Ocean

Like the offshore gear, the Ocean is designed for spending long periods out on the water. It’s built to resist the harshest conditions at sea. So if you plan a long boat trip, several weeks or months, Ocean gear is what you need.

Features

Material

Several years ago, most foul-weather gears were made out of PVC. Today, they are mostly made of polyester/nylon fabric and coated with waterproof agents. There are also foul gears constructed with Goretex. This material is super waterproof, breathable, and highly durable, but it’s more expensive.

Fit

Foul weather gear is designed to fit large to allows you to wear layers underneath and have good freedom of movement. Sizes vary between companies, so always follow the chart and read reviews to get the best indications.

Colors

The color of your suit is critical. When you go out at sea, you want to be as visible as possible. If you fall overboard, you’ll be able to be spotted fast if you wear a bright color suit. Don’t like bright tones? At least, make sure the hood has reflective strips. Another alternative would be to store a high visibility cap swim into you your life vest.

Hood

You must be able to adjust and store the hood. Make sure you can roll it up into a zippered collar at the back and that it has a drawstring to tighten it when needed during use. However, the hood should always have bright reflective patches for maximum visibility.

Pockets

The more pockets, the better; You want to be able to store small stuff while boating. If the jacket has interior pockets, that’s even better. However, make sure the front pockets are cargo style with zippers and storm flaps securing with velcro. The zippers should run smoothly and be easy to grab with gloves.

Jacket

The jacket should fit large enough to accommodate several layers underneath, and it should feature a drawstring at the bottom to block the elements. It must be comfortable and long enough to cover your neck as well as the bottom. The front should have a storm flap on the zipper for maximum protection. Finally, the cuffs should have velcro straps or snap attachments to get the perfect seal.

Pants

Offshore and coastal foul weather gear usually comes with bib pants. They are comfortable, easy to put on and off, and keep water out exceptionally. The bib should feature velcro cuffs to secure around your boots. It should also include high abrasion knees and bottom reinforcement. The pockets on the pants, if there are any, should be cargo-style, with storm flaps and velcro closures. Finally, the shoulder strap should be wide, adjustable, and comfortable to wear. For a short and calm day at sea, you can get away with lighweight waist pants.

Zipper

Generally, most brands use anti-corroding zippers on foul-weather gear, but some don’t. So when you buy a suit, always check if the zippers are noncorroding.

Otherwise, they might get rusty and break. You want the zippers to be of high quality and big enough to grasp when wearing gloves.

Collar

The collar must be high and fleeced to keep your neck warm. Some come with a shin flap and snaps attachments, which is practical to secure the collar.

Elastic Waist

Ok, it’s not very fashionable, but it will help you slip on and of the pants and prevent water from entering inside.

Seams

When buying foul weather gear, always look for welded seams. These are the most robust and durable.

Deck Boots

Deck boots are also an important part of foul weather gear. They need to be well insulated with grippy outsoles.

Final Words

With this list of foul weather gear and buying guide, you should be all set up for your next boating trip. Knowing you made the best choice will give you peace of mind for several seasons. And when you have peace of mind, you’ll enjoy more your journey on the water!

  1. Wow so many gears to choose from. It is best to know in the environment you will be going. That will help determine which jgear to go for. I love the Helly-Hansen Crew Hooded Midlayer Jacket. It is beautiful and looks very protective. Love the white color, but doesn’t  it get dirty quickly and doesn’t the color fade quickly? Another thing I hate when it comes to gear selection is poor zip quality. It makes me avoid having to use that jacket clearly. Thank you for the informative article.

    • Hi Bernard,

Yes, you are right, white gets dirty quicker, but it’s bright, which is super important when you are out at sea as you can be seen from afar. However, it’s machine washable, thus super easy to clean:) Great jacket!

  2. Although I do not spend much time fishing myself, I certainly can appreciate the need for some good rain gear!  I like the variety of products you have listed here, especially being that some of these rain coats are breatheable.  Living in the south, one thing that I look for in a rain coat is that it protects me from the rain without making me too hot. I also appreciate how at the bottom of the post, you cover all of the basics that are included with most foul weather gear.

    • Hi Andrew,

Oh, foul weather gear can be used for various outdoor activities, apart from fishing and boating.

I agree a high-quality suit will protect you from water and won’t make you sweat inside. The best material for this is Goretex, but it’s also more expensive; however, it’s worth it:)

Thank you for the comment, and if you have any questions, please, don’t hesitate to ask; I am always happy to help.

      Have a fantastic day!

  3. I have a friend that has been telling me about these pants and jackets that are of really high quality. And I discovered he was refereeing to Ourcan rain suits. My friend says it is 100% waterproof and he has put it to test in the most adverse experiences due to his work. So, I have concluded that if it works for him, it will also for me! Now, I wanted to ask you, who says they are not waterproof? Could you tell me where I can read their report?

The Ourcan is a heavy-duty suit, but as you can see, we all have different tastes and opinions, which make things interesting:). If you click on the picture, it will direct you to the page itself on Amazon, and there you’ll find all the reviews.

I hope it helped; please let me know if you have more questions; I’ll be glad to assist.

Thanks again, and I wish you a lovely day.

  4. When one has the right outdoor gear, it makes it so much more enjoyable to be enjoying it, so it is great to find this selection of waterproof jackets and pants for not just boating, but can also be used for fishing and other wet weather activities.

I was hoping to find a jacket that is made from eco friendly materials, so would any of these jackets be made with recycled plastic, rather than virgin plastic? Or is there a non-synthetic option available? Thanks

There are eco-friendly rain jackets, but not on this list. I will make a separate post for this, so stay tuned:)

  5. I had a bad experience before during a boat trip so I will definitely be more prepared the next time I try it out. I love the design and color of the Helly-Hansen Crew Hooded Midlayer Jacket and it seems to have a very reasonable price. Thanks for the recommendations. It will become very handy in the future indeed!

  6. I am always look for this kind of gear because I spend a lot of time in the outdoors.  I fish on large lakes and often get caught in the weather.  I particularly like the Navis rain suit because of the suspenders…. not need to worry about keeping pants up.  I think that the lightweight Columbia Jacket is perfect for the backpacking I do… again getting caught in the weather.  Do you know if these come with some kind of a guarantee in terms of durability.  I am going to bookmark this site.

    • Hi Anastazjia,

Sorry for the late reply. I had a minor technical issue. Columbia is a reputable brand that makes high-quality outdoor gear, so there is nothing to worry about for durability. As for the warranty, you’ll have to check on their website. I suppose they do offer one year. But not sure because they were no info about this.

I hope it helped. Please, let me know if you need more info. I’ll be more than happy to assist.

  7. All of these garments look like they’re suited for protection from the rain whether or not you’re on a boat. Although it’s one of the more expensive ones, the Gill jacket looks like the best. Having so many pockets provides for a lot of storage. The only problem is that ot doesn’t come in small. Does Gill also make pants?

    • Hi Pascal,

Yes, most foul-weather gear listed in the article can be worn for outdoor activities, although I personally think that some of them could be too cumbersome to wear if it’s only for hiking or trekking. To answer your question, Gill is specified in marine equipment and clothing and has all kinds of apparel to choose from. If I didn’t promote here is because Amazon has only one or two articles of Gill.

I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more help. I am always happy to assist.

  8. One thing that I’m always on the lookout for is good wet weather gear for myself as I’ve kept away from fishing trips and camping as I really hate getting wet and cold. I love the range that you have shown me here although they are mainly for men. The one that interests me is the Windrider Pro foul weather gear. Do you think this would be ok for a 5’6″ woman? I like that it has 13 pockets and reinforced crotch and knees.

    • Hi Lily,

Yes, this suit is available in smaller sizes too.If you don’t mind wearing men’s clothing, that could be a great fit for you:). However, if you plan on layering underneath, make sure to choose a bigger size so that you can have free range of movements.
