Octobermoon Snorkel Surface Scuba Mask Review-Should You Get It?

The Octobermoon is extremely popular and well appreciated by many snorkelers because it has excellent features and offers great seal to the face! It is undoubtedly a fantastic mask for beginners and children as it allows breathing normally through the nose and mouth while snorkeling. So if this is what you are looking for, then you should take a look at the Octobermoon Snorkel Surface Scuba Mask review!

Overview

The Octobermoon is an excellent snorkel full face mask that lets you breathe like you normally do on land. This mask allows you to discover the beauty of the underwater world without worrying about your mask fogging up or leaking.
This means you don’t need to remove the water from the tube or the mask thanks to its separate flow air chamber and its dry snorkel.

Features

Design and Material

The frame of the mask is made of polypropylene, which is a robust and durable material. The skirt is made of skin-friendly silicone imported from Japan. This silicone is soft to the touch and seals all types of faces fantastically. As soon as you get in the water, the mask will fit your face like a glove!

Lens

The lens of this mask is flat, which gives a better view. The round lens tends to distort the images. With the Octobermoon flat lens, you will be able to see things clearly in the water. Also, the lens is made of Polycarbonate. It is a sturdy plastic that resists shocks, giving more protection.

Airflow System

The Airflow System is one of the best pieces of this mask. It is a separate breathing chamber that enables the expelled air to circulate in the mask, which prevents fogging problems. This feature helps you breathe easily through your nose and mouth, allowing you to snorkel longer distances.

Dry Snorkel

The October Moon has a detachable snorkel made of the same material as the lens, which is polycarbonate.
There is a Splash Guard placed on the top of the tube that stops the entrance of the water, so your breathing is not interrupted while you snorkel.

Purge Valve

At the bottom of the mask, there is a small chin valve. If, for whatever reason, your mask leaks, the water will drain out of the mask as soon as you lift your head. Thanks to this feature, you will never need to clear your snorkel or mask of water anymore!

Straps

The adjustable straps are soft and comfortable on the skin. You can wear the mask without feeling any pressure on your head while snorkeling. Also, these are very easy to adjust to the size you need!

Colors

What I like about this mask is that it offers a variety of colors, so you can match it to any style of your swimsuits!
The Octobermoon comes in Blue kids, black, pink, blue, green, pink/white, and blue/white.

Sizes

The Octobermoon comes in three different sizes
XS – S/M – L/XL

Weight

This mask weighs 635 Gr. It is one of the lightest masks on the market, apart from the Tribord, being the lightest one.

Warranty

Octobermoon offers 90 days money-back guaranty if the mask doesn’t meet your expectations!

How To Use The Octobermoon

First, check if the mask fits correctly. For this, you need to put the mask on your face without using the straps and breathe like you normally do. If you feel a small pressure on your face, it’s a good sign. It means the seal is perfect. If you don’t feel any pressure, then you need to adjust the straps to the correct size.
When you are in the water, just snorkel on the surface and breathe naturally. If water gets inside the mask, just lift your head to drain the water out.

Where To Snorkel With The Octobermoon

You can snorkel in any water body as long as the water is not too agitated. This mask is often used in swimming pools as well as in lakes and the sea. There are absolutely no restrictions to snorkel anywhere you wish. Of course, it is highly recommended for children and non-swimmers to swim in shallow water.

Can You Wear Glasses With The Mask

It is not a good idea to wear glasses with the mask because the arm will break the seal. What you can do though, is to wear soft contact lenses. They work fantastically in the water and are comfortable on the eyes.

How To Get The Right Size

You should choose your mask based on the dimensions. Measure from the bridge of your nose to your chin with your mouth closed.

XS= Measures between 3.35 to 3.94 Inches
S/M = Measures less than 4.7 inches
L/XL = Measures greater than 4.7 inches

Can You Wear The Mask With Facial Hair?

You can try, but honestly, it is not recommended because it could break the seal of the mask. The skirt should always sit well on the skin, and if it doesn’t, then it will cause a leakage problem. The same will happen if your hair is caught under the skirt; it will deform the body of the mask. So make sure to attach your hair before putting the mask on!

What Not To Do With The Octobermoon

There are a few things you should avoid doing with the Octobermoon.

1) Because the lens is made of plastic “Polycarbonate.”It is extremely susceptible to scratches. Don’t leave your mask in the sand, and also avoid putting it face down if you are not wearing it.

2) This mask is fantastic for snorkeling on the surface but not for diving and neither for fast swimming. The reasons for this are. First, you can’t pinch your nose to equalize the pressure in your ears. If you go down underwater, the mask will compress your face and not only become annoying but will leak. And secondly, if you swim fast, you won’t get enough oxygen as the tube is quite narrow.

How To Care For The Octobermoon

After each use, clean your mask with gentle detergent and rinse it with tap water. Then dry the lens, preferably with a microfiber towel, to avoid making spots or scratches. Leave the mask dry naturally outside. Once it is completely dried, store it in the bag.

Who Is The Octobermoon For?

Everyone can use the Octobermoon, including children as well as snorkel beginners or even advanced snorkelers!
There are safety precautions not to overlook, though, when snorkeling with this mask. Children should always be accompanied by adults as well as non-swimmers. However, anyone who wants to have a pleasant snorkeling experience should wear this mask!

Why Should Buy The October Moon

Surprisingly, the Octobermoon turns out to be less expensive than other full-face masks of the same quality. If you ask me why, I’d say. Honestly, I don’t know because I didn’t find any reason for this. Apart from the silicone skirt being incredibly soft to the touch and creates a fantastic seal to the face. Otherwise, this mask has the same features and is as effective as some other high-quality full-face masks on the market.

Pros

  • High quality
  • inexpensive
  • Seal fantastically to the face
  • Comfortable
  • Lightweight

Cons

  • Does not come with a Go Pro
  • Does not suit for fast swimming, freediving, and spearfishing

In Conclusion

Jaw pain, swallowing water and leaking masks are the most common problems for first-time snorkelers. It really is annoying to deal with these issues. The sad thing about this is that many people give up snorkeling. This shouldn’t happen because there is nothing as beautiful as the underwater world! So if you want to have a pleasant snorkeling trip, don’t hesitate to get the Octobermoon. This mask will exceed all your expectations!

What about you? Did you already snorkel with the Octobermoon mask? Is so, you welcome to share your experience in the comments below.

  2. What perfect timing for me to find this information on the octobermoon snorkel mask! My son and I live in Florida and go to the beach a LOT! We love looking under water at the fish and also searching for the perfect shells on the sandbar. With that being said, we have been looking for snorkel gear as well as a life jacket for jet skiing. This helps with the snorkel. We are also looking for an underwater light, do you know of such a thing that can be used with snorkeling?

    • Hi Matt,

Florida is the perfect place for snorkeling, the marine life is fantastic, there! Indeed a life jacket helps float on the water. No doubt that it makes the snorkeling trip more pleasant! Underwater lights are designed only for diving deep in the water or for snorkeling in the night. If it’s your aim, then, Yes, of course, there are many types of underwater lights and I will be reviewing the best ones soon! So stay tuned:)

Thank you for the comment and wish a wonderful day!

  3. Hello Daniella
Wow great article. I love being in the water but my wife has an aversion to putting her face in the water. I think the Octobermoon mask might be just the ticket to getting her to accompany me in the shallows.Love that it comes in different colors(she is a huge pink fan) What type of full face mask could you recommend for me because I also like free-diving? Thanks again for this great article

    • Hi, Vic,

I am glad you like the article, thank you!

Many people feel the same, don’t worry about this:) If your wife doesn’t like the idea of putting her face in the water, then the Octobermoon will be perfect for her!
As for free diving, you can only use a traditional snorkel mask. The full face masks are only designed for snorkeling on the surface of the water but not for free diving. As I have mentioned in the article, there is no possibility to equalize your ears to release the pressure as you go deeper in the water. And this applies with any full face mask because your nose is inside the mask, so you can not pinch it!

      I hope it helped!

Please, feel free to contact me if you need to know more information about these masks.

Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day!

  4. Thanks for your detailed review!

We are shortly heading away on a beach holiday and I have been looking into getting snorkel masks.

The one thing that makes me a bit nervous about buying these masks online is the size and fit. You have helpfully put measurements up to help choose the right size but it still makes me a little nervous just in case it doesn’t quite fit right.

    • Hi there,

If you follow the instructions on how to take the measurement, there is no reason the mask won’t fit!
If you are nervous about it, then you should try it offline first and if it fits, buy it online. However, Amazon is a reliable marketplace. So there is nothing to worry about, you can replace it whenever you want if there is an issue.

I wish you a fantastic holiday and thank you for the comment!
