The North Face Base Camp Duffel Review – Your Roomy Backpack!

When I go sailing or camping, I always use a good bag to store and protect all my gear! So far, I have tried many bags and to be honest, I have never been as satisfied as with the Duffel simply because they’ve never let me down!

Without a doubt, these are one of the most-rated travel bags on the market! Of course, there are many of them out there, but if you are looking for a bag that is easy to carry and with lots of space inside to store all your stuff, then you should check out the North Face Base Camp Duffel review! I am pretty confident this Duffel will meet your expectations!

Features

Material and Design

The North Face Camp is a stylish and a simple cylindrical bag that is made from laminate fabric and ballistic nylon on the bottom. This material is rugged, flexible, and agreeable to the touch. One thing is for sure is that this bag will keep all your gear completely save and also, will serve you for years to come.

Straps

What I like the most in the North Face Camp is that it can be carried as a backpack as well. It features two removable backpack shoulder straps, which you can adjust to the size you wish, and that you can throw over your shoulders. It is a big plus as it enables you to do something else with your hands when you need to.

The shoulder straps are well padded, and on the sides, there are two durable grab handles. These straps allow carrying the bag without hurting your back or your shoulders, especially if it is heavily loaded.

Storage

One of the first things I look at when I buy a bag is the space inside. And The North Face Camp is quite generous in terms of volume! Thanks to its wide D-shaped opening, you’ll be able to pack and get inside easily.

In addition, it features two zippered mesh pockets, one at the extremity and another underneath the opening, which helps organize small items. This feature enables you to find things quickly. Thus, saves you a lot of time!

Attachment Points

Four grab loops are placed at each end, plus daisy chains in every corner of the bag to help you drag it easily or attach it to any vehicle you want, which is awesome!

zippers

This Duffel features a wide zipper that runs quite smoothly, even if the bag is fully packed. I honestly doubt you will have this kind of issue with this bag.

Weight

The North Face is relatively light, but it is not the lightest one:)

  • The large size = 4 pounds
  • The medium = 3 pounds
  • The small = 2 1/2 pounds
  • The XS = 1 pound
Colors

This Duffel comes in a wide variety of colors to choose from! What is nice about this bag is that you can match it with any clothing or footwear. It will add a stylish touch to your look!

Size

As for the size, be aware that this Duffel runs quite big. It comes in five different sizes, and each of them can be used for any purpose. Let’s see what they can hold!

XL (155L) Fit for a long trip and a large group.
L ( 90L ) Fit also for long trips and large group.
M ( 72L) Fit for the 3 to 5 days trip.
S (42L) Fit for everyday use
XS ( 31L ) Fit also for everyday use

Is it Waterproof?

The North Face Camp material is not waterproof, but it is quite water resistant. It will definitely keep all your gear dry if it gets in contact with rain or snow, but not if submerged in the water! So you should be aware of that!

Is it Worth the Price?

Well, Don’t forget… It is a Duffel:) This brand is extremely reputed worldwide for its exceptional quality. I don’t have to convince you on this subject unless you’ve never heard of the Duffel bags, which I doubt:)

Is it expensive? It depends on what you call “expensive” Everyone has a different opinion about prices. Personally, I think this bag is affordable for what you get as it is of high quality and it will last for a long time.

However, this bag has fantastic features, and it will definitely help you have a pleasant trip! If you want To know the exact cost check on Amazon as prices vary quite often!

  1. Hello Daniella,

As an active teacher abroad, I also am looking for the next suitcase/duffel bag that can carry essentially all my clothes I own. Comparing to a suitcase, do you think it can hold the same amount as a large suitcase?

I also wanted to invest in a duffel bag but I am worried it holds less than a standard large suitcase. I think I am just a bit paranoid.

Other than my fears and become a three suitcase person, I love your analysis of the bag and I will highly consider getting one.

    • Hi there,

To answer your question, it depends. There are many sizes of suitcases, so it is quite difficult to compare. All I can tell you is that you can definitely store an extensive amount of gear inside the Xl and L and even in the M. These sizes are perfect for a trip that lasts more than a week! These are huge! Some find them even bulky:) If you really want to compare, this is something you’ll need to try yourself, but I am certain you’ll end up having extra space using this Duffel!

Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!

  3. My wife and I are world travelers and we are always looking for good gear to help us do that. I have jused North Face backpacks for many years when we id more outdoorsy hiking and camping but alas now the pack is too big and bulky to serve as a good carry on for flights.. It appears the small or very small duffel
could be an excellent carry on so thanks for the great review.

    • Hi Robert,

That’s wonderful your wife and you love traveling worldwide:)

I agree with you, the North Face Base Camp is great for camping and traveling and yes, it is a big bag. The small and xl small are less bulky than the large ones. Many travelers use them for flights, you should consider trying a smaller size.

Thank you for the comment and wish you a wonderful day!

  4. Okay, this has my dad written all over it! He lives in Alaska and is really needing a new duffel bag. His looks like it went thru a war zone. He visits me frequently and travels light, so this is perfect. Do you know if this meets the size requirements for a carry on?

    • Hi Matt’s,

The bigger sizes are way too bulky, I don’t this these will meet the size requirements. The small and large bags will definitely suit for traveling.
I hope it helped. Let me know if you need more info. I am always happy to assist.
