TOP PICK

1. Earth Pak Waterproof Backpack

Average Rank: 4.7 out of 5

The EarthPak is a reliable dry bag built with large padded shoulder straps that cush your shoulders and help spread the weight evenly when the bag is heavily loaded, releasing pressure on your back and enhancing comfort. It’s 100% waterproof, which means you can rely on it to keep your valuable content dry and safe while you are enjoying your trip.

Feature

The D-rings on the shoulder straps allow you to tie your bag to your kayak, boat, truck, or motorcycle. The waist belt keeps the bag stable and close to the back, preventing it from moving. So you won’t feel off-balance when carrying your content. Also, the back panel is ergonomic and well-padded, adding extra back support.

Material

The Earth Pack is made of waterproof 500D PVC and is built with welded seams. This is a thick and strong fabric that withstands rain, snow, dirt, and saltwater. Whether you go boating, snorkeling, fishing, or on any water trip, you can count on it to keep all your stuff completely dry.

Closure

It has a roll-top closure with a strip at the front, which, in my opinion, is much safer than a zipper when it comes to protecting items from water. It’s easy to use. Just fold it a few times and buckle it with the help of the strip, and Voila!

Pockets

There is a large proof splash outer pocket at the front and two zippered mesh pockets inside to keep items separated, making it easier to take things out—no need to search for stuff in the bag, which simplifies life. Plus, there is a ring to which you can attach your keys.

Sizes

The Earth Pack comes in two different sizes, 35L & 55L. The smaller one is great for a few days’ trip and the bigger one for approximately a week. Not to mention, it also includes an IPX waterproof phone case that protects your phone from water, which really comes in handy when you are on an outdoor excursion.

Pros
  • Excellent customer service
  • Easy to clean
  • High-quality material

2. Piscifun Waterproof Backpack

Average Rank: 4.7 out of 5

Material

The Piscifun is a heavy-duty backpack constructed with thick, waterproof 500D PVC using a thermal-welding method. This means that the bag has no stitching. It’s completely sealed without any holes. So nothing can get inside or out. The bottom and stress points are reinforced with a sturdy vinyl material to ensure you can carry the bag without worrying it will rip in the middle of your trip.

Traps

It comes with two padded adjustable straps that allow you to clip or unclip the bag. This is useful in case you want to use only one strap and carry it around your shoulder. Or you can grab it by the handle placed on the top of the bag.

Closure

The closure system is reliable and easy to use. Like all dry bags, you need to roll the top down and buckle it with the clips to get a maximum watertight seal. Once you fill it with stuff and seal it properly, you can enjoy your trip without worrying about your content getting wet. Some users even use it as a pillow when camping or as a buoy down the river.

Pockets

It has a convenient front mesh pocket that allows you to store small things. There is a drawstring system that you can tighten to hold the content in place on the pocket. Just be aware that mesh is not waterproof, so be careful with electronic items.

D-Rings

This bag has carry loops and D-rings that allow you to carry extra gear like water bottles, shoes, or whatever you want. The only downside about the D-Rings is that they are plastic, which is a little less durable than metal, but the good is that plastic doesn’t rust over time, and it’s easy to maintain.

Sizes & Colors

This bag looks small from the outside, but it’s spacious and can hold a lot of content. It comes in several different sizes 5L, 10L, 20L, 30L, and 40L. All of them include two straps and are available in nine different colors, which gives you plenty of options to choose from.

Pros
  • Spacious front mesh pocket to store small items

3.Skog Å Kust BackSåk Waterproof

Average Rank: 4.7 out of 5

The Skog A Kust Bačak is smartly constructed. It features padded back support made of EVA foam that is breathable, soft, and supportive, making it super comfortable and easy to carry.

Straps

The straps are well-cushioned and easy to adjust, making it easy to shorten or lengthen the bag while on the go. Plus, there is a sternum strap at the front, which helps stabilize the bag and keep your hands free to carry other things. The D-ring on the side comes in handy to attach your bag to a boat, hold a water bottle, or other stuff.

Material

This bag is also made with rugged 500D PVC material with welded seams to protect all the gear from water, snow, and dirt. It really does a great job of keeping all the content dry and safe once wrapped up inside.

Closure

There are two ways you can close this bag. First, you have to roll down the top a few times; then, either use the top buckle or the side clips to get a snug fit. When you close it with the top buckles, it creates a ring form that allows you to hold it by hand.

Pockets

The outside zippered pocket is spacious enough to store small items, but it’s not waterproof. So, avoid storing precious content in it. But the interior pocket is roomy and waterproof, and there are two extra stretchable pockets to store additional content.

Sizes & Colors

It comes in 25L and 35L; both sizes are very spacious inside and have the same features. They come in a wide variety of beautiful, bright colors. Plus, there is a reflective patch on the bag and around the zipper that enhances visibility at night. This is very useful in case you want to spot your bag quickly or want to be seen better in the dark from a distance.

The Skog A Kust received a very high rating on Amazon, which means a lot!

  • Padded back panel and padded shoulder straps make it comfortable to carry

4. IDRYBAG Waterproof Backpack

Average Rank: 4.6 out of 5

Material

The IDRYBAG is made of three layers of 500D Vinyl-coated woven polyester with sturdy welded seams, making it extremely durable. With this fabric, you can rest assured all your stuff will remain dry during any outdoor or water excursion.

Bonus

I like the Idrybag because it’s sturdy and because it comes with a bonus mini waterproof 2 L dry bag excellent for storing small items like a towel, water bottle, or whatever you want. Also, it has a clip on the top to attach it to the front of the big bag. Very handy!

Closure

Its roll-top is easy to use. You close it by rolling the top down a few times, then lock the buckle. And if you want a snugger fit, you can compress the bag with the stretchable strap that comes over the top.

Straps
The shoulder straps are large, padded, removable, and adjustable, making it extremely comfortable and easy to transport. You can carry this bag either by its roll-top closure or on your back.
Pockets

It has multiple zippered pockets: one on the side to hold a water bottle, one inside to separate your content, and another on the front for extra storage. Just be aware that the front pocket is splash-resistant, not waterproof. So avoid storing important items that could be destroyed easily if the bag gets soaked.

Reflective Strips

Another great feature worth mentioning is the reflective strip on the front that allows you to be seen at night. If you happen to lose your bag, you can spot it quickly, which is very useful.

Sizes

Know that this bag is huge, but consider that it gets smaller as you roll it, and not to forget, you have the 2L that comes with it. The 20L is great for a few day’s trips, and the 30L for about a week.

The Idrybag is an excellent waterproof backpack that will allow you to focus on your activity and enjoy your trip to the max!

Pros
  • Excellent quality and withstands saltwater, dirt, and snow.
  • It comes with a waterproof mini 2L dry bag that can be clipped.

5. Chaos Ready Waterproof Backpack

Average Rank: 4.5 out of 5

Material

The Chaos Ready has a classic look, and the drawback is that it comes only in one color, but it does an excellent job keeping the content dry. It’s made of heavy-duty 500 PVC Tarpaulin and sealed with high-frequency welded seams, and it’s super durable once closed. No water, dirt, or sand will get inside this bag. This fabric is flexible, durable, and completely waterproof, making it ideal for kayaking, boating, and any outdoor trip.

Closure

Its closure system is very user-friendly. The only thing you have to do is roll the top a few times and clip it with its buckles to make it watertight. Once closed, it automatically creates a handle that allows you to carry it by hand, which is useful if you just want to grab it from one place to another.

Pockets

There are two side mesh pockets 3.5 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall to hold standard water bottles. If you go on long hiking trips, these pockets will be of excellent help. The front pocket features a velcro closure and is big enough to store small items. Just know that the front pocket is not waterproof. Thus, you will have to be careful and avoid storing electronic stuff.

Straps

The two padded shoulder straps keep you comfortable as you walk. The downside here is that there isn’t any chest strap to hold the shoulders together. However, the good thing is that the shoulder straps are adjustable and offer a wide range of size options.

Sizes

The Chaos comes only 22L, which can accommodate quite a lot of stuff like clothes, towels, wallet, phone, and a few other things. It’s the perfect bag for kayaking, fishing, surfing, or boating, but not for long hikes.

Pros
  • Waterproof, keep all stuff dry and safe.
  • Easy to close and open.

Closure

The cool thing about this bag is that it can be secured in two different ways: down the sides or over the top. It has a waterproof purge valve on the front that pushes out the air when you compress the bag, reducing bulk when you secure it. It also helps secure the bag properly.

Pockets

There is a mesh pocket on each side that can hold 30 oz water bottles, easy to put in and out. Additionally, it has several inner sleeves and a spacious pocket to store small items such as tablets, books, maps, and many other things. The front pocket is also removable and completely waterproof; this means you can store small stuff on the front, and everything will stay dry, even if the bag gets soaked.

Straps

The removable waist strap and chest straps help keep the bag close to your back and stable while you carry it. Reflective Strips

Sizes

The Nelson Rigg comes in 20L and 40L. The 40L is huge and can hold stuff for a week’s trip, while the 20L is smaller and big enough for a few days’ excursion.

The bag’s top and end are made of 500 Denier Polyvinyl Tarpaulin, while the middle is translucent PVC, allowing you to see your content through the bag. These fabrics are well known for being 100 percent waterproof, so you can count on this bag to protect all your stuff from water and enjoy your water trip.

And the bigger one (30L) has two padded adjustable shoulder straps for maximum comfort, which is very convenient when the bag is heavily loaded.

Closure

It has a roll-top that you fold three times and clip using the buckle, and you are good to go! Like the other backpacks listed above, it’s easy to use, and its wide opening is a real breeze when it comes to filling up the bag. Plus, you can hold it either by hand or on your shoulders.

Pockets

The 20L and 30L have a water-resistant outer zippered pocket on the front to store small items. But like most dry bags, the pocket on this backpack is not waterproof. The 10L has no front pocket, but there is a loop on the side that allows you to attach it to your kayak or any other vehicle.

Reflective Strip

The cool thing is that the logo is reflective, and this can come in handy if your bag gets overboard or want to be seen from afar.

10. HEETA Waterproof Dry Bag

Average Rank: 4.6 out of 5

Material

The Heeta is a great dry bag with various carrying options, which I detail below. It’s made of high-quality Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), a sturdy material that makes this bag entirely waterproof. Users love how this bag keeps all their stuff completely dry when out on the water. They also love its transparency. You can see all your belongings through it, which is a plus if you want to find things quickly and a minus if you don’t want people to know what you are carrying. However, you can always wrap your content in a towel for more privacy. Heeta uses fusion-welded seams to construct this bag, meaning the material is welded using heat, which is much more durable. No stitching, so be sure no water can pass through.

Closure

Closure The Heeta features a high-strength woven nylon band with two side straps. The closure system is straightforward. You join the two edges, roll down the top, buckle it up, and you are good to go! If you seal this bag correctly, there is no way water will get inside. Plus, if you leave air, it will float.

Straps

The shoulder straps are detachable, and there is a nice carry handle on the side that allows you to carry it as a travel bag. One thing to mention is that the small bags 5l and 10l feature only one shoulder strap, while the bigger sizes 20l, 30l, and 40l have two back straps to hold heavy weight while on the go.

Every strap features reinforcement points to maximize strength and ensure the strap doesn’t break in the middle of your trip. Oh, one more thing: those straps are adjustable, so you can easily adjust them to the size you need.

Features

Features It has two useful D rings on the carrying handle and on reinforcement points that enable you to attach the bag to your boat, kayak, or any other vehicle. The case is 100% waterproof and transparent, so your phone is well protected.

Capacity

The Heeta is available in 5l, 10l, 20l, 30l, and 40l.

The smallest sizes are suitable for a day trip, and the biggest for several days. But the great thing is that the largest bags become smaller as you roll down the top. So you can always play with the size, and you are never restricted in terms of space.

  • Removable and adjustable straps
  • Easy to use
  • Transparent allows you to find things easily.
  • Well built

Cons

Buying Guide

Companies use different materials and sealing methods to make their backpacks waterproof and durable. And if you know what to look for, chances are you’ll get the right backpack for your water trip. A buying guide will help you know about the features you need to check before deciding which bag you’ll choose.

Seams

Welded Seams: Seam welding is a technique that uses heat and pressure to seal the bag. This method is robust, long-lasting, and can withstand two times more stress than taped seams.

Taped Seams: Taped seams are when waterproof material is glued or heat bonded to each seam to cover the stitched holes, which secure the bag and make it waterproof. Not as powerful as welded seams.

Ultrasonic Seams: Ultrasonic welding is a process that uses mechanical vibrations and not direct heat like in the welded method. These vibrations produce heat when the surfaces of the fabric friction against each other. And as a result, the fabric melts and fuses together. It’s as strong as the welded seam technique, though.

Material

Dry bags are mainly made of two materials: vinyl or Nylon. Both fabrics are excellent, but each has its pros and cons. Choosing what meets your needs will come down to what you plan to do with it and your personal preferences.

Nylon: Nylon dry bags are generally coated with a waterproof hydrophobic lining fabric to keep things dry. This makes the bag softer and more flexible but sturdy and durable. Nylon dry bags are evaluated with D( Dernier). This represents the mass density of fibers (thickness of the material). The higher the D, the stronger the bag. Other good things about nylon are that it’s lighter than vinyl and remains flexible in cold weather.

Vinyl: Vinyl dry bags are thicker and stronger and, therefore, more durable than nylon dry bags. They often come in 500D or 1000D. These bags have a high level of waterproofness and are abrasion-resistant, making them super durable. The downside with vinyl bags is that they get stiffer in cold weather and are bulkier than nylon bags.

Comfort

Comfort is an important factor not to overlook when choosing a backpack, especially if you plan to go on long hikes. You need to pay attention to the features of the bag before you buy it. Here is what you need to look for:

-Shoulder Straps: Make sure the straps are well padded so that they don’t dig into your shoulder when the bag is loaded. Also, check if the straps are adjustable. This way, you can get the proper height and position the bag on your back for maximum comfort. Try to opt for wide shoulder straps; they are comfier than narrow straps.

-Hip Belt and Chest Belt: Those belts are useful if you carry more than 25 30L. They are great for taking the weight off your shoulders and holding the bag in place. It prevents it from moving around and rubbing as you walk. So it’s always a good thing to have one on your pack.

– Back Panel: If you go on long hikes with heavy loads, a back panel will make your trip more comfortable. Look for a padded mesh back panel built with a ventilation system to allow the air to circulate between your back and the bag.

Closure System

Backpacks come with either a roll-top or zipper. So, let’s see what the differences are between them.

Roll-top: A roll-top is by far the best option to protect the content. Roll-top backpacks may maybe a little more challenging to close, but when secured properly, they are entirely waterproof.

Zipper: On the other hand, Zippers are easier to secure but aren’t always waterproof. Also, if you overstuff the bag, the zipper can break or get stuck. If this happens, you will need to replace the whole bag because a zipper costs almost the same.

Sizes

Backpacks come in different sizes and are measured in liters. Usually, the smallest ones feature only one strap and have no additional pockets. The bigger sizes are built to carry more stuff, so they often have padded shoulder straps, back panels, and extra compartments.

1L to 10L: Holds small stuff, excellent for everyday use.

20L: Holds a few towels and clothes, excellent for a day hike.

30L: Holds camping gear, sleeping bag, excellent for a long weekend.

40L: Holds a lot of gear, excellent for a week excursion

Tip

  1. Waterproof backpacks are sturdy and durable. But that doesn’t mean they won’t tear if you throw or drag them on rocks or gravel. You may be unpleasantly surprised.
  2. Always wash your bag after you use it. Saltwater and sand can damage the material. So I highly recommend you rinse it in and out with clear water and dry it properly when you come back from your trip.
  3. Make sure you fill your bag correctly. I mean by this, don’t stuff your bag only with cameras, phones, and other devices. It will create empty space, and this could interfere with the sealing. Always add some towels or clothes so you can roll your bag and secure it.

My Final Words

With this list of backpacks and a buying guide, it would be difficult not to make the right choice. All the bags you see in this review received a high rating from thousands of users, which means people really love them. My favorite backpack is definitely the EarthPack because it’s well-constructed and has all the features I need for my trips. What’s yours?

Is there a waterproof backpack you would want to add to this list? If so, you are welcome to share it in the comments below.

  2. Hey Daniella. Very interesting article. Im big fan of mountain trips, and waterproof backpack is one of the ‘must have’ items for longer adventures. I had already few of them, but to be fair not always I was fully satisfied with quality and ergonomics. And with so many options on the market its not easy to choose proper one, that’s why your review is so useful. I especially liked Idrybag one, and Im looking forward to test it in practice.

  3. I think I like the Piscifun Waterproof backpack the best. I paddle board a lot in the summer. And we normally leave everything on shore, and push off on the boards. Granted we are leaving the dock from a house, but you never know. So being able to take everything with us in a pack, would be awesome. Great recommendations!

  4. So many great options here! I go hiking and to the beach a lot with my family and have been thinking about getting a waterproof backpack. The Nelson-Rigg pack looks like a great option. I really like how it also has pockets for water bottles on the side.

  5. For me it is all about the practicality, comfort and also the weight. I experience that weight can slow me down when I go hiking. I have to say that all of them has its draw back but Skog Å Kust BackSåk Waterproof seems loke what I am looking for. Thanks you so much for your review, I am going to give it a try.

  6. Hi Daniella Wender,

Thank u for this great collection of backpacks. I think you have managed to pick out the very best and your selection is wonderful. I loved the Piscifun Waterproof Backpack. The material seems nice and it would be ideal for the outdoors as we go on a lot of treks which can get us wet sometimes. I will definitely choose one of the backpacks you have suggested.

    Thank u

I totally agree with you when you said the backpack needs to be comfortable so you can carry it around everywhere without any difficulties. I really like the IDRYBAG Waterproof backpack. It looks stylish and it comes with a mini waterproof dry bag, which is handy. If I ever do decide to go hiking or any outdoor adventure, I know where to buy waterproof bags from!

  8. These backpacks would also be good to use for a picnic in the woods, or taking a family trip to the country side. I would really like that with my family.

I like the IDRYBAG  BACKPACK because of the colour, big storage, and it has multiple zip pockets. The cons seem not be that major.

Have you used or bought one of these? If yes, how was your experience? Thanks for sharing.

  9. I have used dry bags for boating before but they were nothing like these. I didn’t realise they made them as proper backpacks what a great discovery, thanks.

I would certainly be interested in one of these for my outdoor adventures. I am just wondering though do they all have the same waterproof features is it just the cosmetic features etc… that are different? I know that the roll tops are better options than the zips but apart from that is it just cosmetics?

    • Hi Dave,

Today, many dry bags come with padded back straps to make them convenient for the carrier.

These are the perfect bags for outdoor trips; I am sure you’ll find one that meets your needs:)

Dry bags are made of either vinyl or nylon and coated with a waterproof agent to answer your question. As I mentioned in the guide, the higher the D number, the stronger the bag will be. The seams are also a crucial feature not to overlook when choosing a dry bag. Welded seams and Ultrasonic Seams are the best stitching methods. So always look for these features before you buy your dry bag.

I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more info. I am always happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day!

  10. hi

Thank you for this wonderful post on these high-quality waterproof backpacks. In my part of the world, it is always either humid or raining. I mean the weather is so unpredictable that you get into the supermarket on a sunny day and the moment you come out it is raining cats and dogs. We also do a lot of hiking in this area. Therefore waterproof backpacks is a necessity here.

I love the Skog Å Kust BackSåk Waterproof. I love it’s features, it’s straps and it’s material. Even though it’s front pocket isn’t waterproof, it has interior pockets to store other small items. Thank you for the recommendation.

  11. This is a very thoroughly researched and well written article.  I could purchase any of these, but I tend to stay away from those packs that are reviewed with a structural flaw, like straps or seams wearing out.  The prices are very reasonable on Amazon. I would stay away from the Piscifun pack as it has a really inexpensive price tag and it also has a ripping problem. Other than that, I could purchase any of these based on your reviews.  Warren
