The 303 Marine Clear is a powerful multi-surface cleaner that cleans and protects vinyl seats of boats and vinyl windows such as Eisenglass and Strataglass. This product received a high rating from thousands of reviewers on Amazon. So there must be a good reason for this.

Many customers said that this cleaner protectant brought their boats back to life after using it.

This product has been specially engineered for clear vinyl, but users found it works very well on colored vinyl. Many vinyl cleaners leave swipe marks or swirls after applying them, but the 303 Marine makes the surface look brand new without leaving any greasy residues or layers of dust.

It sprays easily and cleans well, but if you use too much of the product, it will leave streaks. Although it doesn’t state what ingredients have the 303 marine protectants, it’s pretty powerful, so you better wear gloves and glasses to protect your skin and eyes.

But, after using the Spray Nine, his seats came out cleaner than ever. Skeptical? Look at the pictures he put showing the difference before and after the Cleaning – you’ll see by yourself. The Spray Nine is a powerful cleaner, but it doesn’t protect against UV rays. So you’ll have to follow up with a 303 marine UV protectant after cleaning with Spray Nine.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best cleaners out there. However, since it’s powerful, you must rinse with clear water the sprayed area; otherwise, it will shorten the lifespan of the fabric, which you don’t want.

Although it received a high rating on Amazon, some reviewers weren’t happy about the performance of the 3M. They said that it’s more a protectant than a cleaner.

It’s simple to use. All you have to do is spray the surface, wait several minutes, and wipe off with a microfiber towel. And your Upholstery will shine, but not sure if the stains will go away.

Boat Vinyl Seat Cleaner Buying Guide

Vinyl boat seats are more susceptible to drying, cracking, and fading faster because of exposure to the sun and water and regular wear. That’s why it’s essential to use a good cleaner and protectant to keep them in good shape.

There are plenty of vinyl boat cleaners on the market, and if you don’t know what to look for, it will be more challenging to find one that meets your needs. This guide below will help you find the most appropriate cleaners for your boat vinyl seats.

Types of Vinyl Cleaners

There are various types of vinyl cleaners. Some are formulated with gentle soap for removing dirt and light stains. Some contain tougher chemicals and are specially engineered for removing harsh stains such as mildew and mold.

And some act as a cleaner, conditioners, and protectants. This type of cleaner removes stains, revives vinyl surfaces, and provides maximum UV protection. In short, you have it all in one bottle.

What Should You Look For In Vinyl Cleaners?

Odor

The smell is an important factor to consider when buying a cleaner because If you can’t stand the product’s scent, it will be hard for you and your guests to have an agreeable time on your boat unless you aren’t sensitive to strong odors. Try to choose a product that leaves behind a pleasant and fresh smell.

Safe Product

Not all cleaners are formulated the same. Many are safe to use, but some contain toxic chemicals that can damage your boat seats and harm your health. So it’s safer to check what ingredients the product is made of. If you see that it contains caustic or acid chemicals, stay away. Bio-degradable are safer and clean exceptionally well without damaging your seats.

Easy of use

Some cleaners come in spray form, while others in bottle or gallon form. A gallon will be more difficult to use because it’s pretty heavy and bulky. The spray cleaners are more practical, in my opinion, because there is no need to deal with opening or sealing the bottle cap.

Also, the bottle can knock over by accident when using it, which has happened to me a few times. But everyone is different, and what may be easy for you may be challenging for someone else and vice versa.

And if you like the bottle, then, by all means, go for it. But, whatever you choose, always make sure the instructions are easy to follow and read customers’ feedback – they say it all.

Customer service

When buying a cleaner, one of the most important things to consider is the company’s reliability. The product can be of high quality. If the customer service is not good, and your bottle has a defect, or there is an issue with the shipping, you’ll have a tough time getting your money back or getting a free replacement. The best way to find out if the company supports its clients is by reading the reviews on whatever platform you buy your cleaner.

Quality

Quality is key when it comes to vinyl boat seat cleaners. Some cleaners remove harsh stains in just one step but leave greasy residues. For your boat, you want to look for Marine-grade cleaners. These contain high-quality ingredients and are specially formulated to withstand severe conditions at sea.

Versatility

Versatility is a feature you want to look for in a boat vinyl cleaner. A multi-purpose cleaner will allow you to clean your boat and other vehicles like RVs, watercraft, jet skis, cars, motorcycles, and even your house.

Questions People Often Ask

Q: How to Prevent Mildew On Boat Seats?

If mold and mildew get into the material, it’s difficult to take off. Even if you get the vinyl completely clean, the mold is still in the cushion, and the problem is that it keeps coming back.  You can use a cleanser that contains chlorine, but know that it will shorten the lifespan of your vinyl seats.

However, you can do various things to prevent mildew build-up on your seats. Here are some great tips that will help you keep them clean and well protected.

  • Keep your vinyl seats clean; give them a regular wash with soap and water
  • Always dry your vinyl seats after each use.
  • At least once a month, use a vinyl protectant on your seats
  • The key to preventing the growth of mold and mildew is aeration. So aerate!
  • When storing your boat for the off-season, avoid folding your seats. Instead, leave them in an up position.

Q: Can You Get Yellow Out Of Vinyl Seats?

Once the seats turn yellow, it’s practically impossible to get them white again unless you replace them. However, you can do a few things to make them look cleaner.

For example, use a powerful cleaner to remove harsh stains. If you don’t want to use chemical products, use natural ingredients such as sodium borate and vinegar.

Another thing you can do is repaint your vinyl seats with vinyl paint containing UV protection. Just don’t expect your seats to last forever after repainting them, though.

The yellow and cracks will come back after a while, and even faster than expected, depending on how often you use your boat.

A trick that seems to work for many boaters is exposing the cushions to the sun for several hours. I’ve never tried this, but some had outstanding results.

Q: How to Prevent Your Vinyl Seats From Yellowing?

The best thing you can do to prevent your seats from yellowing is to apply a UV protectant at least once a month and cover them with either seat covers or towels when you are out at sea. Also, avoid using sunscreen that is not PABA-free because it contains PABA-aminobenzoic acid, which is harmful to the vinyl seats and your skin.

Q: How Often Should You Clean Your Boat Seats?

The short answer is each time after you return from a boat trip. It would be best if you made a cleaning schedule. However, you should always follow the instructions to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Some cleaners are extremely powerful and can do more harm than good if you overuse them.

Q: How to Remove Mildew From Vinyl Seats?

To remove mold/ mildew and harsh stains, you’ll have to use a mildew remover such as Star Brite or similar products. Or an IOSSO Mold & Mildew Stain Remover. The cleaning procedure is straightforward.

  1. Remove the dirt and dust with a dry rag.
  2. Spray the seats with the stain remover and let soak for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Scrub the vinyl seats with a soft brush.
  4. Remove the product with clear water.
  5. After that, dry the surface with a clean towel.
  6. Apply a vinyl protectant and polish until it’s completely absorbed into the fabric.

Q: How To Clean Vinyl Boat Seats the Proper Way?

The best way to prolong the life span of vinyl seats is to keep them clean and dry and avoid long exposure to the sun. However, when it comes to cleaning boat seats, there are some steps you must follow.

  • Remove any dirt deposits that are on your seats with a dry rag.
  • Spray the surfaces of your vinyl seat using the appropriate cleaner that suits your needs. If you don’t want to use a cleaner, make a blend of mild soap and water, and with a soft brush, clean the fabric.
  • Remove the Soap solution or cleaner off your seats using fresh water.
  • Dry out your seats with a clean towel and let them aerate in the sun.
  • Apply a 303 UV protector and wipe the vinyl seats with a dry rag until it’s completely dry.

Q: Dos and Don’t Of Cleaning Vinyl Seats

  • If you use a cleaner with a strong smell, always clean your seats in an aerated place and wear a mask.
  • Don’t use acetone because this will turn your vinyl seats into a gluey mess.
  • Wear gloves and glasses when spraying the surface to protect your eyes and hands.
  • Avoid using a magic eraser; it will shorten the lifespan of your vinyl seats.
  • Never use ammonia, alcohol, bleach, or Simple Green. These will destroy the material.

Final Word!

With this list of vinyl cleaners and buying guide, you should be able to find an excellent cleanser for your boat seats. All the products listed above are the best you can find on the market.

Some are specially formulated to remove tough stains, while others are more gentle and help you clean and maintain your seats in good shape. So make sure to choose a cleaner that fits your boat’s conditions. But whatever cleaner you choose, make sure it doesn’t contain any alcohol and acid chemicals, as this will destroy your seats.

Happy boat cleaning!

  1. For boat and sea lovers, this is a great article. I never really thought about the cleaning required for boat seats and surrounding surfaces but everything makes sense. The sun can do a lot of damage to the interior and it’s great that you have provided so many products with their pros and cons for those looking for the best product.

With storage during the winter months I can imagine how much mould and grease can build up if not cleaned regularly.

I bet sun lotion can play havoc with such surfaces and when owners spend so much on their huge purchase, it’s important to use the right product.

    Thanks for sharing your review.

    • Hi Louise,
Thank you! I am glad you found this article helpful
Yes, sunscreen can damage seats, unfortunately. That’s why it’s better to choose a sunscreen that is PABA-free.
They have no harmful chemicals and thus don’t cause any damage to either your seats or your skin. So always make sure that you and your guest use only PABA-free sunblocks.

It’s tough to get read of mold once it’s on your seats, but it’s also difficult to prevent mildew during winter storage. However, to minimize the chance of getting mold, you must apply a good product, cover your boat and aerate as much as possible.

Thank you for you, and if you have any questions please let me know I’ll be glad to answer.
I wish to a fantastic day!

  2. It is great, detailed and highly informative review of Vinyl cleaner for boat.

1# Boat Bling Vinyl Sauce stands out to other cleaners and protectors because it is bio-degradable. I personally like it and will give the priority. The only thing I don’t like about this product is the smell of acetic acid or vinegar after cleaning.

You might get tempted to wipe off with chemicals like acetone but it will cause permanent destruction of the vinyl cover.

All the 10 listed products have their unique advantages along with the cons listed. There are some cons one could easily handle

I am not sure if all the boats come with the same kind of  vinyl covers, so strategically you can test all kinds of products to test and arrive at a conclusion what you need to use.

As suggested, it is better to use multiple products or may be at least more than one. It would depend on how tainted or unclean your vinyl covers have been. Then you find what you to need to buy. There are cleaners listed with the review they don’t clean but protect. If it is good protector, use them as protectors along with a good cleaner.

The buying guide covers everything you can imagine. Consider the odor, safety of the product, compatibility of product with your cleaning requirements and ease of the use.

In nutshell, you clean the covers, protect from UV, and maintain them until next cleaning.

  3. This article on the ‘Best Vinyl Cleaners For Boat Seats – That Work Great’ was very insightful.I have been searching for a good cleaner for interior of my truck. I would probably not use any of the products with a loud smell nor the vinegar smell of the Vinyl Sauce in side. The Meguiar has been around for a few decades for exterior use, I had no idea of this product though. No harsh conditions for my truck, but good cleaner is great to keeping a lasting look.

Usually, what works for boats also works for other vehicles. If you don’t like the smell of vinyl Sauce, then this product will be a good choice for you because it’s very strong. But the Meguiar has a very nice odor, based on reviewers.
Thank you for your comment, and if you have any questions, please. Don’t hesitate to ask me. I’m always happy to help. I wish you a wonderful day.

  4. Thanks for the great review.  I have used Meguiars products in the past and they seem to work well.  Question. Do you know if I use this product can be used on a regular basis (daily), will these degrade or damage the vinyl?  Also, can these be used on my paddle board?  Guessing they could but wanted to see if you had any experience with it on those types of surfaces.  Thanks

    • Hi Dave,
You are very welcome. The Meguiars is pretty strong. Thus I would not recommend using it daily. Once every month will be more than enough. Sure, I don’t see why not, as it’s an all-purpose cleaner that works on all sorts of watercraft. Honestly, I’ve never used these cleaners because I am allergic to strong products.
I hope it helped, and if you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to assist.
Thank you for your comments, and I wish you a lovely day.

  5. You have a very interesting article with great details. But most of all I like that you described the various cleaning products and showed all the pros and cons of each product. And what type of cleaner do you prefer and in general did you use any of those that you described here?

    • I Rufat,

The pros and cons really help people decide which product is best for their needs. I personally prefer to use natural products such as vinegar or powder soda. It also works great.

  6. I like the Marine Clear Vinyl Protective Cleaner as it has a UV protector in it, and this is needed for anything that is outdoors to preserve its life.

I don’t suppose that one can use any of these cleaners on material seats? Just wondering, as the material shampoos they sell don’t seem to work so well for stubborn stains.

    • Hi Michel,
as long as the seats are vinyl, there won’t be any problem using those cleaners as they are formulated for vinyl seats. So if you have a vinyl sofa at home, these cleaners will suit perfectly.

  7. This is a really helpful list of cleaners that can be used on boats for anything from seats, to lifejackets, to vinyl and rubber and several other surfaces. It is great to find that some of them even have a UV protector included.

Our biggest challenge often seems to be mold and bird droppings, that seems to be impossible to remove it without leaving a stain. The Spray Nine seems to be the best cleaner to get rid of mold and mildew, even if it doesn’t have a UV protector. Do you know if this is also biodegradable like some of the other cleaners?

    Thanks you.

    • Hi Line,

Thank you. I am glad you found the article helpful. Yes, mold isn’t easy to get rid of and prevent.
That’s why it’s important to use a good protectant on the seats and keep them dry and aerated. To answer your question, the Spray Nine is not a biodegradable cleaner. I don’t know what ingredients this bottle contains. What I can say is that it does a great job at removing tough stains.
I hope it helps, and if you have more questions will be more than happy to assist.
Thank you for your comments, and I wish you a wonderful day

  8. We are going to get our boat out in another month so this is a fantastic article that will help us attack storage dirt.  I am aware of several of these products like Meguiar’s and Mother’s, but I am interested in trying a couple of the products that are new to me.  The biodegradable Boat Bling Vinyl Sauce is the most intriguing for me.  You have given a great review of each with honest pros and cons.  I am going to give this one a try.  This is a site to be bookmarked for future reference.

  10. Thanks for this really great review article Daniella! I am so glad that I found it. Both the Vinyl Sauce and the Starbrite Ultimate Vinyl Clean instantly got my attention because they can be applied to both vinyl and leather. They are also highly rated. I am a bit nervous about the Vinyl Sauce though because of the strong smell of vinegar but would like to believe that the smell should dissipate overtime. Am I right about this? Nevertheless, I plan to try both though – Vinyl Sauce and Starbrite and I will certainly return to let you know how I fared.

    Thank you

You are very welcome. It is a pleasure!
If you apply the cleaner in an aerated place, you probably won’t even smell it. However, if you are sensitive to vinegar odors, you may consider wearing a mask:) I hope it helped and if you have any questions please let me know. I’m always happy to assist.
