2# AIRHEAD AHM2-2 Mach 2 Towable

Average Rank: 4.5 out of 5

The two headrests are of great support for the neck; they allow you to lean back and have a comfortable ride. The nice thing about this tube is that the bottom seats are inflated, allowing you to have a smoother ride than you would with other floatable.

The seats are deep, and the sides wide. This keeps you or your children well stable in the tube and minimizes the risk of falling over. According to Amazon reviewers, the tube slides on top of the water fantastically, and they found it also very easy to inflate and deflate.

It’s tough to say negative things about this tube because it is extremely well-built. But, without a doubt, you and your kids will love this fun toy!

3# Airhead Hot Dog Towable Tube

Average Rank: 4 out of 5

Read review

The Airhead Hot Dog, as is shown in the picture above, can hold three riders. This tube comes with three 30-gauge vinyl chambers, fully covered by a double-stiched 840 nylon dernier. The handles are padded with nylon and placed at each seat, allowing you to hold on to the tube without irritating your hands.

The seats are made of neoprene; this makes the tube extremely comfortable to ride on. According to users, zigzagging with the Airhead Hot Dog makes the ride even more fun for the kids! This tube will save you time as no one have to wait for hours to take a ride as you would with a traditional tube.

Everyone together makes the tour quicker, and it’s a lot more fun! The only inconvenience with the Airhead Hot Dog is that it tends to drive through the water and not on the top as traditional tubes do. This means you’ll need to increase drag to pull the tube, and as a result, you may end up using more gas:)

Overall, it’s sturdy and stable towable, and there is no doubt your kids will love it! This might not be the case, though, if three adults climb on it because too much weight will take the tube underwater.

  • Durable
  • Fun for kids
  • Easy to inflate
  • Very stable ride

Cons
  • Large, thus need more place to store it.
  • Skate slower across the water.

The Airhead 3 Force is a large towable that can hold up to three riders. This tube has a thick PVC bladder, which is entirely covered with 840-denier double-stitched nylon material; it does have the ability to withstand years of use. Many Amazon reviewers have used it for several summers without seeing any sign of deterioration except for some sun fading.

The AirheadForce 3 is large, allowing you to lie on it, get on your knees, or even stand up while holding the handles, of course. However, some users have also stated that the Airhead 3 Force tends to submarine when starting slow. But you can avoid this by leaning back when the tube starts to move.

If you like speed, then you’ll appreciate this toy. It sleeks smoothly on the water and allows you to attain high speed:) The nice thing about this inflatable is that it is completely enclosed, thus enhancing safety and reducing the risk of someone getting trapped underneath.

Thanks to its six knuckles guard and handles, each rider can hold on to two handles when riding. But for security reasons, it’s not recommended that all riders hold to the knuckle guards at all times. 5# SPORTSSTUFF 53-2030 4K Booster Ball Tube

Average Rank: 4.5 out of 5

The Booster Ball is an inflatable buoy with a tow rope that is connected to both ends. This ball will do exactly what it is supposed to do; it will keep the tow rope out of the water, it will reduce the chance of doing submarine, and prevent splashing water in riders’ faces.

Bear in mind, though, that this ball will reduce the risk of doing submarine but not eliminate it completely. The rider’s position on the tube is also an important factor to consider when tubing. The bladder is thick PVC and covered with heavy-duty full nylon material, making this ball extremely durable.

It features a speed safety valve allowing you to inflate and deflate the ball in a matter of a few minutes. It is quite bulky once inflated, thus taking up a lot of space. So, if your boat is small, you would rather inflate it only when you’re using it.

And if you are on your boat, just deflate it and fold it up. Its Hybrid system helps you keep speed in turns much better and reduces drag. The SPORTSSTUFF 53 is a great product.

Once you use it, you will never want to pull another towable on the water without this ball. There is no doubt it will make riding your towable much better and, not to mention, forget about water spray in your face.

Average Rank: 4.1 out of 5

The WOW is a two-person tube that allows you to ride in two different ways, backward and forward. This inflatable is spacious, extremely stable, and tows well behind a boat. The cockpit is deep, and the backrest is high, ensuring you and your kids have a comfortable ride.

Since the WOW has a drop speed bottom, the tube glides better on top of the water, thus causing less drag on the boat. There are two reinforced tow points, one placed on the front and the other on the back, enabling you to secure it to your boat.

Guide to Choosing the Best Towable

Guide to choosing the right towable

With so many towable’s designs on the market, choosing the right one can be difficult. As I mentioned at the beginning of the article, not all tubes deliver the same ride type. However, with some of them, you’ll be able to ride in different positions, fast or slowlier. Below, you’ll find a detailed guide explaining everything you need to know about those fun tubes.

Material

Nylon

The most used material for towable covers is Nylon, called Dernier, which comes in different thicknesses and weights. The higher the number, the thicker and more solid the Nylon will be. Bear in mind, though, that higher Dernier numbers are usually more expensive but can hold more riders.

Lower numbers, like, for example, towable constructed with 420 Dernier, are less expensive and usually can carry one to two riders. This Dernier is also much thinner and lighter, which makes it easier to carry it over, but on the other hand, it is less durable. The 840 Dernier is the highest number, which is heavier, stronger, more expensive, and can fit several riders. However, this one is extremely durable.

Neoprene

Neoprene is a material that is often used in wetsuits. It is soft to the touch and is used as a layer on Polyester or Nylon towable covers to add comfort and prevent chaffing the legs, elbows, hands, and other parts of the body. Neoprene tubes are usually more expensive but extremely comfortable.

PVC

PVC is often used as a coating material on towable bladders or inner tubes. PVC comes in different thicknesses, which are measured in gauge. The 24-gauge and 30-gauge are heavy-duty PVC towable. To give you an idea, water toys for the pool usually range from 10 gauge to 14 – gauge and are much lightweight but less durable.

Polyester

Polyester is another common material that is used in towable. Tubes made of polyester are usually coated with PVC to reinforce the Polyester and are as strong as the high Dernier nylon. Treated Polyester is durable and fades resistant. The tube will not decolorate if exposed to the sun.

Shapes

Today, you can find tubes in different shapes and sizes on the market. There are several important factors that will influence the way your towable performs on the water, such as body position, boat driving, and the shape of the tube.

Deck Tubes

Deck tubes have a large and flat surface and provide a fast ride. The best way to ride these tubes is by lying on your stomach and gripping the handles well while tubing at high speed.

Because those tubes are flat and large, they tend to flip over more easily, but the good thing is that they allow you to climb back easily too. Anyway, falling off is fun, and it’s something you may even appreciate:)

Deck tubes come in many different shapes, such as round, delta – shape and D-shaped, and can carry up to 4 passengers. These tubes are fully covered, providing a massive adrenaline rush. They also tend to keep the face of the riders proximate to the water, and they get through the wake very easily.

These are excellent tubes for a fun and thrilling experience on the water. They are fantastic for adolescents and adults who seek fast and fun rides on the water.

Round Donut

Round Donuts is one of the oldest and cheaper tubes on the market. These were once designed to hold one rider, but today they come in different sizes and can carry multiple riders. These tubes also tend to flip over easily because of their small sizes and high center of gravity. Since the Round Donuts tubes have a hole in the center, small children find these often uncomfortable to lay on or sit in.

Ride On

Ride-on tubes have the capacity to accommodate up to six riders at the same time and come in many different shapes. Since these are long and narrow, they require sitting on top of the towable or in a recumbent style. Because of their high center of gravity and long shape, they also tend to be more unstable than traditional tubes. The ride-on tubes come in D- Shape Design, providing you with the same sensation as the deck tubes. With these, you can have fun on the water while resting your back and head on the back support. In other words, these tubes are ideal for anyone who seeks fast riding while sitting comfortably in an upright position.

Ride IN

Ride-in tubes come also in a variety of shapes and sizes and can accommodate from 1 to 4 riders. Ride-in means that the passenger sits low inside the towable. These tubes usually feature a padded floor that gives the riders comfort while riding.

Tow Rope

The length of the rope will have a significant impact on your riding style. As stated by the Water Sports Industry Association (WSIA), the rope needs to be 50 feet in length but can not exceed 65 feet. If the rope is less than 50 feet, it will tow the tube actively through the wake and, as a result, will spray water in the rider’s face.

The rope needs to suit the size of the tube, and if it doesn’t, it will cause damage to it. For instance, if you use a tow rope for a two-riders tube with a four-riders tube, chances are the rope will break during the ride. Before going on the water, make sure your tow rope does not have frays or knots for more security.

You should always use a tow rope that is designed for tubing only. Never use a wakeboard, water ski, or knee-boarding rope for towing your tube. The reason for that is that they don’t have the same tensile strength and, therefore, cannot pull the same amount of weight.

Inflation

Your tube must be well inflated, meaning it should be firm and without wrinkles to work well. Be aware, though, that the temperature of the water or the sun can change the level of inflation. Therefore, it’s always advisable to fold and store your tube if you don’t use it to prevent any damage.

Valve

The valve is an essential part of the tube; It will either save or waste your precious time, depending on the one you’ll use. Make sure your tube features either a Boston valve, steam valve, or speed valve. Also, it would be best to get the right fit on your electric pump.

1. Boston Valve

A Boston valve is a one-way valve that includes two caps. To fill your tube with air, you need to open the top cap so that the valve can let the air get in without letting any air escape. Then, if you want to deflate, just untwist the valve, and you are good to go. Boston valves are the best you can find on the market.

2. Speed Valve

The speed valve is straightforward to use. The only thing you have to do is place your electric pump in the valve and inflate your tube. As simple as that.

3. Stem valve

The steam valve is the most used valve on towable, and it is the easiest to use. First, inflate your tube by placing your electric pump deep inside the stem valve. Then, to deflate, pinch the stem valve and press on your tube until the air is drained completely.

Tow Point

You should always attach your tow rope to your boat at an attachment point such as a transom tow point or transom eye. Some tubes feature a quick connect clip allowing you to attach your tow rope to the tube easily. Others come with an attachment point for connecting the tow rope. If you attach your tow rope to a low tow point, you’ll have difficulties keeping your rope out of the water, and it will cause drag.
Using a Booster Ball will not only keep your tow rope out of the water but will also enhance the performance of your towable. These Booster Balls work well, especially on pontoon boats as well as on low transom tow points.

Precaution Tips

1. Ensure you and your children wear a life jacket, even if you know how to swim.
2. Speeds for children should never exceed 15 mph, and for adults, 20 mph
3. Both the rider and the boat driver should always communicate with hand signals. This makes the ride more enjoyable and safe for everyone.
4. It is highly recommended to have someone, in addition to the boat driver, have an eye on the tube riders. If the riders on the tube fall, the person on board will show a flag to let the other boats know that the riders are in the water and that they should clear the way.
5. Always make a large turn without accelerating when you boat back to either pick up the riders or change direction. Always be predictable and make it clear to other boaters which direction you intend to head to. By respecting these rules, the other navigators will know your intention and will be able to change course accordingly.
6. Never pull more than one tube at a time. If you do so, the tube may cross paths and collide, and this can, of course, cause serious damage to the riders.

Conclusion

Choosing the right towable is essential because this is what will make your ride fun and exciting on the water. For example, imagine you want speed, and you’ve picked a tube that is designed for a slow ride. Or you want the whole family to enjoy, and the tube does not have enough room for everyone. Wouldn’t it be a shame? With the help of this guide, you will be able to get the best toy for your tubing adventure! So go ahead, make your choice, and have fun!

  2. It’s summer right now where I live, and everyone is getting out on their boats! It’s so much fun to zip about behind a boat, these all look like great options. You mention that some of them would be great for adults to lounge about on with a cocktail, which sounds like a perfect summer holiday activity! Do you know if any of them have cup holders? Probably not, since that’s not what they’re designed for, but you never know. Haha! Or perhaps you could recommend me a nice sturdy blow up pool raft that has cup holders instead? Thank you!

    • Hi Emily,
None of them has a cup holder:) I don’t think they will ever add this feature shortly though. Of course, there are inflatables for pools that have a cup holder, and I will be reviewing them very soon:) So stay tuned!

Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.

  3. We live on the coast and we are just getting ready to make a trip down to Key West. Our friend down there has a boat, so we plan on having a lot of fun on the boat. He does not have any kids, so does not have anything fun to tow behind the boat! I love the airhead tubes. I am going to have my kids take a look and see which one they like the best. I know they will want to, so they can have some fun too. Thanks for the great review.

  13. I really love the Airhead Hotdog, the idea of sharing a towable with your buddies will make this experience a lot more fun. This towable holds three people. It’s made from heavy-duty materials and offers a stable ride, very important while bouncing away behind a boat. The price on this towable is great too, definitely worth the fun it’s going to provide.

    • Hi Jean,

This is what the tubes are made for, to have fun with the buddies:) The Airhead Hotdog is a fun towable, and it’s relatively inexpensive for the quality. Great choice! I am sure you will enjoy your ride.

  14. Ah, this will certainly be a good addition to our sailing gear. But I wonder why these are so expensive. We use normal car tubes and those work just fine too.

I love the SPORTSSTUFF 53-2213 Big Mable Towable, but am wondering if you can provide some sort of a discount as you seem to be connected to Amazon as a seller.

Thanks and waiting for a quick reply.

    • Hi Aparna,

To answer your question, those tubes are expensive for the simple reason that the material of what they are made of is also expensive. Bear in mind that These tubes need to withstand tears and hold the riders. I don’t think it will be safe to use normal car tubes; they are just not built for tubing behind a boat.

Amazon is a big market, not a store where you can discuss the price:) Sorry I couldn’t help you.

If you have more questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. I am always happy to help.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.

  15. These tubes look like such fun and are a must-have for anyone who owns a speed boat. Out of your selection, I like the hotdog one the most, but I was wondering if it stays right side up and doesn’t topple easily, looking at its shape? You say it tends to dive into the water. Do you mean nose down?

I like the fact that it looks like you can fit at least three or maybe four people onto it.

    Reply
    • Hi Michelle,

Tubes are fun, and you are right; everyone should have one. It’s not a must to have a boat, though; I know some people who use them for soaking up the sun on the water:). The hotdog tube stays upright when riding on it, and it’s relatively stable, but it’s a little harder to get it started. It doesn’t slick as well on the water as the flat tubes do.
Even though there are three seats, three adults would be too heavy for the tube. I would suggest either two adults or three young teenagers on this tube.

I hope it helped, and if you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to assist.

Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.

  17. Being towed behind a boat is so much fun. I can remember my first experience in a round donut many moons ago. Finding this list of towable tubes are great and there are so many choices.

The hot dog shape looks as if it might easily flip over if you turns the boats. So which one of these are least likely to turn over when going fast?

    Reply
    • Hi Line,

It’s hard not to flip over when tubing, especially at high speed 🙂 In fact, they are all designed to flip over; it’s part of the fun. The tube’s stability on the water will also depend on the rider position, speed, the rope, and not only on the form of the tube. However,  Cockpit-style tubes are less prone to flip over because they have a wider platform than the donut tubes.

I hope it helped; let me know if you need more info. I’ll be more than happy to help.

  18. Hi Daniella,

What a fun site you’ve got. I’ve done a bunch of different types of water activities but never been on a towable tube…but it sounds like a great idea for my next outing to the beach. I’ve seen others do it but never thought about how it was being done or what people we sitting in. I didn’t realize that you could have so many options! Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Sammy,

Tubing behind a boat is not the only thing you can do with towable. You can lay on it and soak up the sun in a pool or the sea. Children love this toy, but of course, never leave kids alone with towable.

  19. We had a boat years ago, when my kids were young, and it looks like towables have come a long, long way since then!  I’d love to try it again with these big, sturdy tubes.  While I like the recessed seating in some of these, I like the WOW, as it can allow me to be towed backward so I look at the scenery (and not the back of the boat).  My only complaint? No cupholders.  Haha!
