How to Choose the Right Duffel

Material & Durability

To ensure maximum protection against water, dirt, and tears, you need high-quality Waterproof Duffel Bags made of stiff and durable materials. Here is a small list of the most common fabrics used in waterproof Duffel bags.

  • Polyurethane coated
  • Marine-grade vinyl
  • Dernier ripstop nylon
  • TPU laminated

These fabrics are waterproof, thick, lightweight, and extremely durable. However, nylon turns out to be less water-resistant than polyurethane. Both materials are remarkable, but the polyurethane with TPU laminated fabrics is much stronger.

Ease of Packing

Packing is an important factor not to overlook. You want to be able to pack and organize your gear with ease. Also, you need quick access to search for items inside. Therefore, bags that feature a D-shape opening like the “North Face Base Camp Duffel” or a roll-down bag like the “Kwik Tek Dry Pak Waterproof Duffel” are better than models with straight zippers.

These allow you to see better and also let you get in and out of the bag easily. Some extra pockets are always a plus when it comes to storing small stuff! The more pockets, the better! So make sure there are enough pockets and that they are easily accessible, too. The length is also crucial if you need to store long items such as walking sticks or similar outdoor gear.

Portability

No matter if it’s for walking long or short distances with your bag. You would want it to be pleasant for you to hold it. That’s why straps are a detail not to overlook when buying a Duffel. With proper straps, you should be able to carry the bag either as a handbag, over your shoulder, or on your back comfortably.

Some Duffel bags do not possess backpack straps, which can be annoying, especially if the bag is heavily loaded and doesn’t feature wheels to drag it. However, make sure the straps are well-padded and adjustable so that you can fix them to the size you want.

Straps

Removable straps can come in handy if, for any reason, you prefer to take them off. It should always be easy to remove them. Some bags allow you to store the straps in the bag without the need to remove them.

Carrying Options

Compressing straps and lashing points are extremely useful if you want to attach them to a vehicle. The best Duffel bags are those that offer many portability options. If you can, Pull out or drag the bag easily from a car or bus or whatever is very practical.

So it is highly recommended to choose models that feature grab loops at each extremity of the bag. The most convenient way to carry a bag is on your back because it leaves your hands free, and also, the weight is much better distributed across your body.
In other words, the backpack models are much easier to carry than the models without backstraps!

Weight

Weight is also an important factor to consider, especially if you travel abroad. Many airlines today have a carry-on weight limit of 50 pounds and size restrictions as well. The Duffel bags are exceptional for traveling because they are spacious, and they usually weigh lighter than many other bags in the same category. This is one of the reasons why this brand is so popular around the world!

Care & Maintenance

Bags are often thrown and dragged on the floor; therefore, they are more prone to getting dirty. So if you buy or already have a Duffel, you may want to know how to clean it. It is not recommended to wash a Duffel bag in a washing machine because it could damage its imperméabilité.

But if you do so, make sure to set up a gentle hand-wash program cycle. However, clean your Duffel with a scrub brush and liquid detergent inside out, then dry it on both sides. When the bag is completely dry, treat your bag with a waterproofing spray only on the bag’s outer shell.

When is the Best Time to Buy a Duffel Bag

You can use a Duffel at any time of the year and bring it anywhere you want. Just make sure the model you choose is waterproof, especially if you plan to expose it to water. It is important to protect all your gear and keep them dry. Also, these bags can be used for outdoor activities or indoor recreational sports as well. You can enjoy your Duffel all year long!

Waterproof vs. Water-Resistant

You might be surprised how water-resistant Duffel bags can keep your gear dry, even if exposed to snow or water, thanks to their durable material.

Of course, waterproof would be a better choice if you plan to ride a motorcycle in heavy rain or go on a sailing trip. So, when opting for a Duffel, pay close attention to this detail to avoid unpleasant surprises.

Another important thing you should be aware of is that not all duffel bags feature waterproof zippers. Some of them are water-resistant, which may let the water get inside. That’s why roll-down closure systems are excellent for water sports activity; the bag is well secured, and there is no way water will enter inside. Also, you don’t have to worry about the zipper!

Why Should You Get A Waterproof Duffel Bag

The Duffel bags are excellent for outdoor activities as well as for traveling! Whether it is for camping, sailing, sport, motorcycle, or even everyday use, the Duffel bags will protect all your gear.

Large: 75 – 100+: For longer Excursions, people usually take several large bags that can accommodate 70L and even more. However, take into account that bigger bags are heavier to carry. It’s much easier to transport several small bags.

Pros

    • High-quality material protects all your gear from water and dirt.
    • Extremely spacious, making it easier for you to pack and store all your belongings.
    • Lighter than any other bags of the same type, allowing you to carry them comfortably.
    • Extremely flexible, giving you the possibility to squeeze the bag and store it in a small compartment on your boat.

Cons

    • Most zippers are water-resistant and not waterproof.
    • Since the Duffel bags are huge, some people may find them bulky.

Final Word

Duffel is the name of a town in Belgium where the bags were originally made. Yep, chocolate, beer, and chips are not the only things that Belgium does exceptionally well!

The Duffel bags are not only ideal for protecting your gear against water but also for storing camping and outdoor equipment!

There are many waterproof duffel bags on the market, and the ones listed in the article are the best-rated. Which one of these bags is the best? To be honest with you, this will depend on your personal preferences. Everyone’s tastes are different! But if you wish to know what is my favorite one, without a doubt, it is Kwik Tek Dry Pak Waterproof Duffel Bag. Why? Because I love the D-shape opening and its carrying system, it makes it easier for me to pack, carry and store all my stuff in it!

  1. Hi Daniella. Great article. I bought the Patagonia duffle bag a few years ago and while it’s great and waterproof, I checked it with an airline a year ago and unfortunately it couldn’t hold up to the baggage guys. There was a tear in a seam. I would probably try the North Face duffle bag next time. Thanks for the review and analysis. I’ll check them out on Amazon. Thanks for the link to Amazon as well.

    • Hi Robert,

Sorry to hear this, but unfortunately it can happen with any item you buy whether it is online or offline. These are some technical problems we can’t avoid. Yes, of course, it would be a good idea to try the North Face Duffle bag. I bought it and I just love this bag! It is so practical and lightweight. I use it often as a backpack:)

However, I hope this time you won’t have this kind of problem with your bag.

Thank you for the comment and wish you a wonderful day!

  2. You have listed some great options for waterproof bags for boating. I use some dry bags for my boat now, but they are smaller ones that are for my sleeping bags for when camping on islands.

The OverBoard Waterproof Duffel bag is the one that would finish off what I need as it has the better carrying straps and handles compared to my other bags and would make loading and unloading of the zodiac much better and quicker.

    • Hi Travis,

Thank you for your kind comment! If you go camping on islands, then you really need a lot of space in your bags. Well, when I go camping I use big bags. But I am not alone. I have two children and a husband:) So it is a lot of stuff to carry:)

To be honest with you, I’ve never tried the Overboard, but this bag is well rated from customers, and if I have written a review about it, you can be sure it is a high-quality bag because I only love things of good quality!

Thank you again for the comment and I wish you a wonderful day!

  3. I imagine there are some non-name-brand bags out there that will do just fine but then again you get what you pay for.

I realize there are times when it’s best to pay a little more for something that will last longer (like shoes!) and was wondering if that theory applies to these bags.

But you can also overpay for things and get comparable quality for much less…

Have you found a solid workhorse that lasts and lasts, regardless of price?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Jon,

Yes, of course, there are plenty of travel bags out there and of good qualities, but the Duffel bags are just exceptional.

That theory you are speaking about apply to everything in life. It is rare that you’ll pay a low price for high quality. As the proverb says, you get what you paid for!

Unfortunately, it didn’t happen to me yet:) Every time I bought something at a low price, I was disappointed!

I personally prefer to buy more expensive items, at least I am happy with it!

I use the North Face Duffel bag for my gym, or I use it to travel on a short local trip. It’s easy and handy sometimes it can be my pillow in emergency cases.

But lots of duffle bags are easy to tear up upon wearing after a period of time of time. The North Face Duffel is durable and water resistant! Living in a one day 4 season for me is a huge advantage having this bag

Duffel bags are extremely durable, and its lifespan will depend on what you’ll do with it. I honestly think that any bag you’ll use for an extended period will lose a bit of its quality, like any other product:)

Yes, the Duffels are extremely practical and inexpensive for such high-quality bags. Indeed, some Duffel design run small, but not the ones that are listed in this article. In fact, many reviewers complain that they are too bulky:) Maybe you’ve picked a small size:)
However, as long as you are happy with the bag, that what matter most!

  8. The space on the sailing boat was the last thing I would have thought of! Makes sense though. The review on the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel bag looked like the best to me. The extra padding at the bottom and the water proof material are important. I did like the look of the North Face Base Camp Duffel bag better though.

    • Hi there,

Indeed, you are right. These features are critical when choosing a bag. Not all boats have lockers, but many of them offer this option. However, the same thing applies if you want to store your bag in a hotel. It is always useful to be able to fold the bag easily wherever you go. The padding at the bottom is very helpful if you go camping or if you travel.

The North Face Base Camp is a wonderful bag and it is also extremely popular because it can be worn as a backpack and the design is cute:)

  9. I definitely need a new duffel bag for traveling. Interesting fact about the town of Duffel and that is where the duffel bag originated. There, I learned something today! My choice is also the North Face Base Camp Duffel. I really feel like the North Face makes a quality product. I also love the look of the bag, and it seems really functional. A close second would be the Kwik Tek Dry Pak Waterproof Duffel Bag. Does the North Face bag have a waterproof zipper? Thanks for sharing your reviews, this is very helpful.

    Reply
    • Hi Steve and Kris,

The whole bag is water resistant including the zipper, meaning, it can not be submerged in the water. But if it gets in contact with water, it will do the same job as a waterproof bag. If you are looking for a bag that is completely waterproof, then I would suggest you choose the Kwik Tek Dry Bag. This one is 100% waterproof and you don’t have to worry about the zipper being waterproof as there isn’t any because it is a roll down bag. The only downside with the Kwik Tek is that you cannot wear it as a backpack like the North Face Base Camp!

      I hope it helped!

    • Hi Corey,

Yes, many people carry waterproof bags because it protects all the belonging from the water. If you are an avid cruiser, then a waterproof bag will be handy while cruising. If you practice water sport while on vacation, then you should choose waterproof over water resistant.
For instance, the Kwik Teck Dry Pack and the Overbroad are super waterproof, and these bags will definitely protect your stuff!

As a scout, I always look for light, comfortable bags to carry, and these bags seem suitable for traveling. Being waterproof is a big plus.

Yes, as a scoot you certainly need a lightweight and comfortable bag. Patagonia and the North Face Base Camp, both can be carried as a backpack and are lightweight. These are water resistant, meaning they can withstand rain, and snow, but cannot be submerged in the water. This is something you should be aware of.

  18. I’m so glad I stumbled upon your article – I’ve been looking for a new duffle bag for a while now but never know how best to spend the money. In high school I had a Nike gym bag that I thought would be great (because hey, it’s Nike), but after a while it started to smell and even stain from the wetness of the locker rooms (and the zippers broke). It was very disappointing cause I spent good money on it. I never thought of waterproof duffle bags (not just water resistant). Thanks for the information – with all the pros and cons and factors for how best to choose a bag, I feel prepared to invest in a good duffle bag! These brands are so great though – I know you chose North Face, but Patagonia is also so good! Does durability mean less style? Or is the Northface option the best of both world’s?

    Reply
    • Hi Chase.

Nike makes high-quality products, but like in every brand, there will always be a product of less good quality. And yes, Duffel bags are water resistant and waterproof. Durability doesn’t prevent the bag from being stylish. Quite the opposite!
Both the Patagonia and Nothface are fantastic bags. It is just a question of personal preference!

  23. I am a huge fan of duffel bags and have been since the age of 17 when I first joined the Army and went overseas with a couple of them issued by them to me. Over 25 years I dragged these two bags around to many countries and locations. They kept the necessary items and some of the cherished item dry and safe.

After retirement, now 20 years ago, I still used duffel bags, but for different reasons. Camping, fishing trips, boat trips, and other travel meant that I could upgrade from the Army issue bags that often were not that waterproof (or not at all) to the civilian ones.

The 14 best waterproof duffel bags that you have highlighted and reviewed all seem like worthy additions to a traveler depending on what kind of travel they are planning. The great thing about duffel bags is that they can be used in many situations, even around the home.

Of them all, I like the Patagonia Black Hole Duffel the best, as it is lightweight, yet durable and waterproof. The price is also reasonable and it will be a weight saver too, and the few ounces can mean a lot of you are schlepping the bag for long distances.

  24. I wonder, why are not all bags made to resist water? I believe no one would mind having a water resistant handbag. This will assure me that sensitive items like laptops and phones are safe. I like that the North Face  B.C bag can be carried as a backpack and also as a handbag. I find carrying it as a backpack is more comfortable and makes the luggage feel lighter.I do not mind that the bag itself is light at all. Is it not an advantage? I also like the several pockets within the bag. This will help in separating items for easy reach and find.

But the winner for me is the Mad Waterproof bag. I just like the simplicity of it, and the cool color with all the necessary features. The waterproof zipper just locks everything out of the bag. How cool?

Are the duffels specific for people sailing or doing water sports?

I’ve been looking into something like this because I go waterfall hiking a lot, and sometimes I run into situations where I might have to swim to get past a deep water obstacle.

With gear in my day pack (including my DSLR camera as well as other things I don’t want to get destroyed by water), I’m curious if I’m better off lugging a duffel versus a dry bag?

I know I need a bag that can compress to be small enough to fit in my day pack when not in use, but can be large enough to house my day pack and camera when I have to get through water obstacles.

You think the waterproof duffels can fit that need?  Or would a dry bag do that job better?

    Thanks

    • Hi Johnny,

Thank you for passing by and the comment. Duffel bags and dry bags are excellent for all sorts of outdoor activities.

The difference between them is that the Duffels generally have a cylindric shape and a zipper closure. Dry bags look more like a sack of punching balls and have a roll-down top. These are great for kayaking, sailing, surfing because they don’t take much space, and of course, they keep all the content dry. The Duffels are more for traveling, camping, gym, and boating.

If you go waterfall hiking and pass water obstacles, you should definitely get a dry bag, preferably with padded straps and D rings. A Duffel bag will be too bulky. Although the Earth Pack Duffel, the first one on the list, offers maximum protection against water, I still would go for a dry bag if I were you.

Here is a list of dry bags. I am sure you’ll  find a good dry bag for your hiking excursion:)

I hope it helped, and if you have more questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I am always happy to assist.

      Have a fantastic day.
