Planning a trip to Capri and want to know how to get there in the most efficient way? If so, fantastic, you are in the right place! There are only two ways to reach Capri, which are by boat or helicopter.

It doesn’t matter if you travel from Naples, Rome or any other Italy city, you won’t have the choice but to sail or fly. But don’t worry; it’s fun and not as complicated as you may think it is. In this article, you’ll find everything you need to know about how to get to Capri, Italy.

From Naples to Capri

Getting from Naples to Capri

Via Ferry: From Naples to Capri ( 50 minutes)

Capri is an island located south of the Gulf of Naples, and the most economical way to get there is by taking a ferry. Getting a boat to Capri would be an easy feat considering that the Port of Naples is one of the busiest and largest in the Mediterranean Sea Basin.

Two ferry options can get you to Capri from the ports, the Aliscafi high-speed ferry and the Navi ferry. The Aliscafi offers daily departures from Molo Beverello Port and the fastest way to get to the island by sea.

Navi ferries depart from Calata Porta di Massa and can be an alternative if you’re looking for bargains and affordable rates.

It will be a 40-minute journey that will stop for a few minutes at Central Station to pick up a few more passengers. From the piazza, you can then take an approximate 3-minute walk to the ports of Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa.

Via Taxi: From Naples Aeroport to Naples Port ( 9 minutes)

If you prefer to transfer from the airport to the port by taxi, you may do so but choose the licensed ones and arrange a fixed rate.

If you’re coming from Procida, you can get to Capri through Ischia. There are ferries that can take you from Procida to Ischia in just about 25 minutes. Once you arrive in Ishia, take a ferry to Capri.

If you want a faster journey, you may take the hydrofoils, which are 10 minutes faster compared to the ferries.

The ferries leave in the morning from Ischia and depart from Capri in the afternoon. These routes are also available only during summer, from April to October.

Amalfi Coast is located in the Gulf of Salerno in the South of Italy and is UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are direct ferries that can take you to Capri in 50 min, but consider that the schedules for this route can vary due to weather and other external factors. There are 3 ferries per day that sail from Sorrento to Capri.

To get to Capri’s island, you have to travel via train from Rome Termini Station to Naples and then hop on a ferry to Capri.

The distance from Rome to Naples is only 140 miles. All trains in Naples leave from the Roma Termini central. The fastest option is the Eurostar Freccia Rossa or TAV, which can get you to Naples in just an hour and 10 minutes.

The crossing time from Sorrento to Capri takes approximately 25-30 minutes. In the summer, ferries are more active and offer service transfer about every 30 minutes.

From Sorrento city center, you can get to the port of Marina Piccola by going down the stairs from Piazza Tasso, but know that it will be more challenging to climb all these steps back on your return.

If you want to skip the stairs, you may take the shuttle buses or a lift from the Villa Comunale for €15, where you can enjoy the breathtaking views of Sorrento.

Get to Capri Via Helicopter

The fastest way to get to Capri is by helicopter. Of course, it’s the most expensive option, but it shortens your travel time and saves you hassle with crowded public transportation.

Some companies offer exciting excursions and transfers by helicopter from Naples airport to Capri, including Florence, Rome, and many other Italy cities. The helicopter service usually includes pick-up from your hotel or airport, which is convenient.

Private Transfer vs. Regular Transfer?

Private transfers can provide you with ease of travel. Regular transfers to Capri will demand you to endure the hardship of public transportation. You will need to transfer multiple times just to get to the ferries.

And when you finally get on board, the boat will be packed with people. If you opt for a private transfer, you will get to your ferry or vessel without the hassle, and you won’t have to worry about carrying heavy suitcases.

Tips

  • A pleasant way to explore Capri island’s beauty and all its attractions without dealing with public transportation is on an organized day trip. An 8-hour day tour offers pick-up service from the airport or hotel on a comfortable coach and includes a local professional guide, a boat ride, delicious snacks, beverages, and lunch. You also get plenty of time to explore the island on your own or take a short boat ride to the Blue Grotto before traveling back to your destination.
  • If you’re planning to bring your car or motorbike, know that private non-resident vehicles are not allowed on the island during peak tourism periods. Capri has one road, the Provincial Highway, and it has fully operational buses for commuters. Upon your arrival on the island, you may use a porter service to move your luggage from the dock straight to your accommodation. It will not be cheap, but you will definitely appreciate the service, especially when you have the road’s steep condition.
  • It’s worth mentioning that the ferry companies change ferry status quite often due to sea conditions, so I would highly recommend checking them the day before traveling.
  • If you want to avoid suffering from seasickness, slower ferries will be a better option for you. You might want to consider taking the middle seats at the back row and enjoying the breeze for the entire journey.

Final Words

Getting to the Capri islands can be easy if you plan your route well. However, if you are loaded with baggage and not on time, the whole trip can turn into a disagreeable adventure. If you want to avoid traffic, public transportation, crowds, and heat, a private transfer would be the best option. It will surely save you time, hassle, and in some cases, money too!

Have you been to Capri? If so, How did you get to the island? I would love to know!

What is the best time of year to visit?

Is it very busy during the summer?

Is english widely spoken at tourist attractions?

I haven’t sorted out my full itinerary, but I’m quite sure that I will go there from Rome. May I know if you needed to have a swab test for COVID-19 checking at any points there?

What’s Capri like? I would love to include a tour of Capri in my trip, but I’m pretty limited on time. In your opinion, what are the best places to visit in Italy?

    • Hi Kevin,

Capri is a beautiful island. If you want to know more about Capri, here is a guide that will give you lots of useful information. If you are short on time, a day tour would be best for you. There are many fun tours you can do in Capri. The most popular places are the Blue, White and Green Grottos. Hiking and strolling around the island are also fantastic activities. You could also explore the beautiful views from the Villa San Michele or have a nice dinner in one of the seafront restaurants. If you want something romantic, you can rent a boat for the day. The list is long.

I hope it helped. Please, let me know if I can assist you with something else; I’ll be more than happy to help.

  7. Thank you, Daniella, for this great article about Capri. It brings back good memories. We traveled to Italy by car in the early 60thees when I was a little child, with blond hair and green eyes. It was always something special. They spoiled my sister and me with love and tenderness, great food and hospitality I never found in my life again. That is why I always have a great passion for Bella Italia. We travel almost anywhere, but somehow we never came to Capri. When it is allowed to travel again, we will visit Capri this year. The video convinced us. Thank you so much for this article.
