Guide to Buying a Boat Cover
Types of Covers: Storage vs. Trailering
2. Trailering boat covers
Why Selecting a Quality Cover For Your Boat
Boats are expensive, and it is in your best interest to protect yours at all costs. One of the most effective ways you can do this is by investing in a high-quality boat cover that will keep your beloved boat in top condition and safe from the many factors that impact the condition of your boat negatively. A high-quality boat cover should serve the following purposes:
– It should be water-resistant as well as possess the ability to repel moisture. Keeping your boat dry is important in preventing the development of mildew and mold.
– It should keep away insects and animals that could potentially compromise the condition of your boat when it is not in use.
– It should provide some level of concealment so as to protect your boat from potential thieves.
Price
Prices of boat covers vary depending on the brand, material, and functionality. However, it is generally cheaper to buy covers online. A locally-made custom cover will obviously cost more but will probably offer better functionality.
Online shopping vs. your local retailer
On the other hand, boat covers for older boat models or lesser-known brands are not as easy to buy online, and the quality is also questionable. It is better to buy a cover for such a boat from a local custom retailer, where you will find a slightly more expensive but high-quality design.
What Are the Material Options There to Choose From?
Fabric Properties
Trailerite semi-custom
Hot Shot polyester fabric is the most suitable fabric here due to its combination of superb features, high performance, and reasonable price. The fabric is rugged and acrylic coated, and it comes in six different colors.
Trailerite custom covers
There are two options available here: Hot Shot and Ultima urethane-coated polyester (7 oz.) The latter is a great choice for tropical climatic conditions, where heat and humidity prevail, due to its UV resistance and durability. It is available in six colors.

Tying Cords
Some Common Mistakes To Avoid
2. A fit that is too snug- A tight fit is no good either since it will stretch disproportionately over time.
3. Not using enough tying cords – This leaves your boat cover loose, and prone to flapping as you drive, which is very dangerous since it affects your visibility.

This is an informative and educative article. You have thoroughly put everything in perspective for anyone reading this post to understand the points. I have read about Classic Accessories StormPro H-Duty Console Boat Cover but I haven’t tasted its benefits this much. Also this is the most comprehensive review i have ever read on AmazonBasics Boat Cover for V-Hull Runabouts and Bass Boats. From your article, Its obvious the pros outweighs its cons which makes it much more recommendable. Thanks for the eye opener
Hi Ola,
You are very welcome; I am glad you found the review useful!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
This article is very informative especially for boat owners as it is very vital to have boat covers for your boat. I have come across a lot of boat covers and I have also bought some myself only for them to be inferior. Is there a way to know if these products are original and are there easy places to get them?
Hi Linus,
I am glad you found the article useful.
I don’t know what you mean by original, I am sure they are. Well, sure some of them were imported like many products on the market today.
The best place to buy boat covers is online because it is much cheaper than in offline stores.
Let me know if you need more info. I am always happy to help!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
You have given an amazing number of different boat covers to choose from here.
I think it is an excellent idea to invest in one of these, as you have most likely spent a lot of money on your boat, so you would obviously like to keep it in good condition. Just like you would buy a cover for your cell phone.
I think the trickiest thing about ordering a boat cover online would be to get the measurements right so that you can ensure that the cover fits your boat properly. But it is probably worthwhile to do as you save a lot of money if you buy online rather than at a store.
Hi Michele,
Yes, it would be a very good idea to invest in a boat cover if you care about your boat. It will keep it intact!
It is easy to order the right size, you can not go wrong if you take your boat dimension properly. Some of them are stretchable, making things easier for the buyer:)
More and more people buy online because it’s much cheaper and it’s so easy to get a refund if the product doesn’t meet the requirements.
Thank you for the comment and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.

Thanks alot for this informative post, I’m a lover of the sea though I don’t have a boat because it’s quite expensive getting one but I do fish with my uncles boat and I needed to read through this to get exactly what I wanted about boat covers, as I help in taking care of his boat but I haven’t seem to see a perfect cover until today but what I want to ask is which is the best when it comes to waterproof properties?
Hi there,
Many of them withstand water. I don’t know what is the level of their waterproofness, but the Classic DryGuard, PrimeShield, Leader Accessories, Budge 600 Dernier and the MSC 600D are quite waterproof.
I hope it helped. Please let me know if you need more info, I’ll be more than happy to assist!

Being someone that have gone on several trips, I know fully well the essence of having a good boat cover which in my opinion is independent of the season whether wet or dry.

A very good friend of mine who is into this business of boats recently needed a good boat cover the very last time I communicated him but he was so skeptical about getting it quickly because he doesn’t know the ones that will last for a long time as there are different kinds of boat covers in the market. I was excited seeing the review on boat covers with their pros and cons. I think this will be of so much help as I show him the best boat cover that he needs.
Hi there,
I am glad you found this article useful and I hope your friend will find the right cover for his boat.
If you need any help. please let me know. I’ll be more than happy to assist.
Thank you for the comment and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
You mentioned that the Classic Accessories StormPro H-Duty Console Boat Cover, comes in different varieties and caters for different sizes and types of boats.
But, I wanted to know if they come in varying colors too? I know it’s just supposed to cover and protect the boat from the elements and damage of different kinds, but I take aesthetics seriously with whatever property I own.
And since I’d be covering my boat, with all its beauty, at least I should be able to obtain some beauty from the boat cover.
Hi Peace,
I love colors, too. I think it’s crucial 🙂 In fact, dark colors would be the best choice because they provide higher protection against UV and they get less dirty, making it easier to clean. This particular model comes only in grey.
I hope it helped:)
Let me know if you need more info. I am always happy to assist.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
Hello Daniella, the importance of boat covers can never be overemphasized. Not only do that help in saving boats from unpleasant weather conditions, they also make boats to look way neater.
When it comes to choosing boat covers especially for storage covers, I prefer a custom fit boat cover. With that one can easily choose desirable materials and measurement.
I love the number two boat cover—boat cover for V-Hull runabouts and bass boats. It is made of 100% polyester material which is my preferable material and it serves dual purpose, ie trailering and provision of cover whether in storage or during transportation.
Hi Gracen,
Yes, the Amazon Basic Boat cover is fantastic and it does a great job!
I am sure you’ll love it!
Thank you for the comment and I hope you enjoy the rest of your day.
The MSC 600D looks really interesting, I’ve got my eye on that one! That warranty helps a lot too, 3 years is a long time, I think I’d definitely forget about that warranty after several months of using it. Love the durability part, that’s the most important part of all, can it withstand snow too?
Hi Riaz,
Yes, the MSC withstands water, UV as well as snow. You can be sure your boat will be well protected.
Let me know if you need any help. I am always happy to assist.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a nice day!
I have been looking for a boat cover for a while and was very happy to see this article because it is better to compare it than in many I have seen.
But my main attraction is the classic Accessories StormPro H-Duty, I have had similar before and like it.
But do you know how durable and qualities the sewn-in straps are?
Are any risk that I will be untangling bungee cords? Because I want to have the possibility to leave things in the boat when trailering without concern of them flying out.
Hi Jóhann,
The boat cover that you see on the list are the best ones on the market. They received high ratings on Amazon, which mean something. Of course, there is no such thing, perfect product. There will always be pluses and minuses in everything.
I hop it helped. Please let me know if you need more info. I’ll be more than happy to assist you!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.
You have thoroughly covered this topic. I was wondering about ways to keep your boat safe from little rodents and insects like roaches when stored for extended periods. I know keeping it dry and clean helps but keeping it dark like under covers can attract them. Do you know of some products that one can use to repel these menaces?
Hi Denise,
There are plenty of rodents and insect repellent products on the market. I don’t use them, so I can not suggest to you. You should Google these products online; I am sure you will find something very efficient.
I hope it helped.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
Great selection of boat covers! I think your pick is probably the best. My brother has a boat that he keeps docked. It is a covered dock so it has some protection. He does not have a boat cover. I am wondering if he should? Seems like with this kind of investment, a cover is a given. So if I want to surprise him, I just need to know the exact type of boat, so I get the right cover. Right?
Hi Matt,
If he wants to keep his boat in a good condition, then it would be advisable for him to buy a boat cover.
Yes, it would be best to know the type of boat and the measurements, this is crucial!
If you need any help, please let me know. I’ll be glad to assist!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.
I am very pleased with No. 6, Trailers twice at 65-70 mph and no signs of tearing or fraying. Material has a very reasonable weight and appears to be quite stiff. It’s also suitable for snow, it is well worth the money.
Hi Andrew,
I am glad you’ve found the right cover for your boat. Enjoy!
I needed more information about boat covers and your guide has helped me with a buying decision. Have reviewed these boat covers you suggested, and I am trying to find out if can return a them if the right cover will not fit like it should? Or the return policy on defective product? The area I live in it rains a lot so the Heavy Duty Waterproof cover is what will be purchasing. I will be sharing your website with my followers.
Hi Jannette,
I am glad you found the article helpful. Thank you. If you purchase a boat cover that doesn’t fit or has a defect, you must send it back to the seller before the window return expires. I think that you can return every product you buy on Amazon up to 30 days after the delivery date. I am not sure, though. So this is something you’ll have to check before you buy a boat cover.
I hope it helped
Please let me know if you need more questions. I am always happy to help.
Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day.
I have been looking for the ideal boat cover to be used at mooring or during winterizing. I want to protect my boat and equipment against dust, sun, and humidity. And I think I have finally made up my mind. The AmazonBasics Boat Cover for V-Hull Runabouts seems to be my best fit. I particularly like the rear air vents that allow moisture to escape.
Do you have a page where I can see specs about these two sizes?
Hi Henry,
Great choice, the AmazonBasic is an excellent boat cover. I am sure you’ll love it.
To see the specs, just click on the picture or the link just below the image. It will redirect you to the Amazon page seller.

I have a 22 ft CC Tidewater offshore boat. I purchased a StormPro T-Top boat cover – that will fit up to a 24 ft CC, so it will cover the motor. Easy to install. We are in FL and have lots of rain and sunshine beating the crap out of the cover. It has faded – to be expected- but has held up really well. Even with the high winds of our recent storm, it was fine. We saw a suggestion from another reviewer to tie a rope or bungee from the tower of the boat to the bow which makes a nice tent shape. This lets water drain and not pool. It works much better than the pole. We have not had any problems with water pooling.
Hi Dalton,
To be honest with you, I have never tried this technique on my boat:).So I am not in the best position to advise you on this matter. I use the straps that come with the cover to tie down my boat cover. But if you want my opinion, I wouldn’t do this for several reasons. The rope’s end can fray or untied, the cover can tear, and I don’t think it will provide maximum protection from the elements. But hey, if it works for you, then fantastic!
I hope it helped. If you have any questions, I’ll be more than happy to assist.
