The zipper is sturdy and helps you slip them on and off easily. These boots are excellent for flat fishing, sailing, walking on the beach, or through rocky streams. The rubber outsole is grippy and provides excellent traction on slippery areas. These will keep you well-steady on the deck.

What to Look For In Deck Boots
They are many types of deck boots. And before choosing a pair, you need to know first what you plan to do. So here are a few questions you need to ask yourself.
Is your water excursion take place in mild weather and colder conditions where you need to keep your feet warm and dry?
Will you be standing on your deck in poor or cold weather where your feet need rugged boots that provide more protection?
Here are some suggestions:
For walking on land or standing on your boat in fair and rainy conditions: Wear Short or midheight rubber deck boots
For boating in poor weather and cold temperatures: Wear High rubber deck boots
For sailing offshore in bad and cold weather: Wear Neoprene offshore boots
Material
Rubber
Rubber deck boots are 100% waterproof but not really breathable. Rubber deck boots are made of either PVC or natural rubber or are composed of both materials, PVC and rubber.
PVC deck boots are cheaper but are less durable than rubber boots. Yes, you may save a bit of money, but not in the long run!
In terms of performance, Deck boots made of PVC and Rubber are almost equal to natural rubber, and the price comes as close as PVC boots.
Natural rubber boots are more durable and flexible and provide better traction on wet surfaces. Also, they keep their flexibility in cold weather and are usually more expensive than PVC.
Foam PU
In Europe, some footwear companies use a FOAM PU (Polyurethane) material in deck boots. These are waterproof, comfortable, and flexible. But the problem with Foam PU boots is that they tend to deteriorate fast if exposed to chimicals and warm conditions. But if you rinse them after each use and store them in a dry and cool place – they will last for a long time.
Leather
Some deck boots are made of Nubuck, and others of full-grain leather. Nubuck, which is made from top-grain leather, provides fantastic durability, thickness, and softness, contrary to traditional top-grain leather. Full-grain leather has a smooth finish and tends to retain less moisture than most other natural leathers. Both materials are excellent choices for deck boots since they are durable, breathable, and rugged. Leather deck boots are usually fixed to a microporous layer such as Gore-Tex, which renders them breathable and waterproof.
Neoprene
The neoprene material is usually placed at the upper part of the boots and lined on the inside. Neoprene is waterproof, soft, warm, and well-padded. But when mixed with rubber, they are not breathable, and they tend to retain moisture.
Synthetic
Synthetic is a material that is breathable, abrasion-resistant and dries fast. The upper boot construction is usually made with synthetic and also includes a waterproof and breathable layer such as Gore-Tex. Synthetic material is generally integrated into leather and or rubber boots for more comfort and performance.
Traction
Most deck boots’ soles are made of all kinds of synthetic rubber materials. And it’s not always easy to see their effectiveness in terms of traction on wet surfaces. So, how can you tell if they have a good grip? Here is what you do. Check the sole – the softer it is, the higher the level of traction you get due to its flexibility. Bear in mind, though, that the softer the sole, the faster they will wear out.
If the degree of softness of the sole is medium, then it will offer excellent grip and durability. You can rest assured your boots will last for a long time.
Insulation
Deck boots are waterproof and designed mainly to keep the water out, but not really to keep you warm. Although many boots offer excellent insulation, you’ll still have to wear socks according to the conditions. Especially in cold weather! Even if you plan to sail in the tropics in fair conditions, your feet still can get cold. The colder it is outside, and the longer your excursion, the more you’ll need insulation! So when choosing a pair of deck boots, you should always check the level of insulation according to the weather conditions. There are deck boots that are either well-insulated, lightly insulated, or not insulated at all.
Rubber Boots
PVC or Rubber deck boots are not insulated and let penetrate cold through the footwear. With these types of boots, you will have to wear thick socks to keep your feet warm in cold temperatures.
Neoprene
Neoprene boots offer excellent insulation as they are usually made from 5 – 10 mm thick neoprene. In fact, the thicker the neoprene, the higher the insulation. Deck boots made with neoprene will keep your feet warm in extreme cold.
Some deck boots come with a breathable synthetic lining, but the level of insulation is low. With these, it is necessary to wear thick socks in cold conditions to keep your feet warm. But in warmer weather, they’ll keep your feet cool and well-aerated.
Breathability
Deck boots made with “Gore-Tex,” a waterproof and breathable fabric, repel water and, at the same time, allow water vapor to pass through. This material is composed of stretched polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), making it extraordinarily lighweight and flexible. These boots get the moisture out and keep your feet well-aerated all day.
Deck boots with synthetic lining are best to wear with wicking socks so that moisture can escape through the fabric of the boots easily.
PVC, Rubber, and neoprene boots are waterproof but don’t let moisture out. If your feet sweat, you won’t be able to aerate them until you change your socks or take the boots off or dry them out.
Fit
When spending long hours on a boat, it’s important to have well-fitting deck boots to keep your feet dry and warm. So, when you try your boots on, make sure you do so with the pair of socks you plan to wear, whether thick, medium, or thin.
Know that most boots don’t provide a lot of arch support. And if your feet need more support, you may want to replace the insole with a customized insert of your choice. It’s always better to try the boots on with the insert so you can get the right fit. The toe box must offer enough room for your toes. This way, they don’t get cramped. Once the boots are on, move your toes and feel if they are free to wiggle.
Also, check if your heel cup can move up and down without being too loose in the boots. And finally, your boots’ upper needs to be wide enough to fit comfortably. But not too wide so that you can get your pants over.
The last thing you want is for your boots to fit too tight on your feet. This could block the blood flow and cause your feet to cramp and make them feel like ice blocks. If you plan on wearing your boots in cold weather, you will need to go up a size so that you can wear thick socks with them.
Questions People Often Ask
Q: What Socks should you wear With Deck Boots?
Socks are resistant to abrasion and pull moisture away from your skin. Some types of socks will keep your feet warm and dry, while others will do the opposite. For example, cotton socks tend to absorb water and can cause your feet to get damp and cold.
Synthetic socks absorb moisture and provide good insulation. But when moisture builds up in the boots, they don’t cope well with it.
Be aware that even breathable boots will have difficulty expelling moisture completely.
When your feet sweat, moisture accumulates inside the boots. As a result, your feet get damp and will dry completely only when moisture is expelled. The best solution to avoid this is to wear socks made of Merino wool.
Merino Wool is made of fine fibers, making it extremely comfortable, even on the most sensitive skin. Not only is this material super soft and itch-free, but it also traps heat extremely well between the fibers. So if moisture buildup in your boots, you can count on Merino Wool socks to keep your feet dry and warm.
Q: Should You Wear Gaiters?
If you sail a lot in bad weather at sea, then wearing gaiters is the best thing you can do to keep your feet dry. Gaiters provide excellent protection against water. Even if water gets inside the gaiters, it will flow and escape through drain straps into the bottom.
Q: What Height Do You Need For Deck Boots?
Short deck boots are typically lighweight and provide very little protection to the feet, whereas tall boots provide the best protection. On a rainy day, water may penetrate inside your boots if they are short. But if they are high, this will not happen. So this is something you should consider.
Q: How to Dry Your Deck Boots?
It’s not always easy and practical to dry out your wet boots while standing on the deck in bad weather. If your boots get wet, then you may want to change your socks frequently. A good trick to dry your boots is to stuff them with newspaper, a rag, or a towel. This will remove most of the moisture and help them to dry faster.
Q: How to Maintain Your Deck Boots?
The lifespan of your deck boots not only depends on the construction and material but also on how you’ll take care of them. Even if you don’t wear them often.
For leather, it’s crucial to clean them with a brush and warm, soapy (non-detergent) water to remove saltwater. Make sure to rinse them well so that salt, dirt, or seawater is completely removed. If the boots have a Gore-Tex lining, it would be best to clean the inside with soft, non-detergent soap and water to remove sweat and salt.
Afterward, rinse and wipe well. To dry leather boots, never use artificial heat. Just let them dry naturally minimum of 48 hours. Once completely dry inside and out, store them in a cool and dry place. For rubber or neoprene boots, rinse them with fresh water, then dry and store them.
Final Thought!
Every sailor should have a pair of deck boots on board within reach. They are easy to slip on and off, comfortable, and, most importantly, they will keep your feet dry and warm all day. One thing is certain: you’ll be happy to have them on when you need them the most! With this list, you’ll be able to find the right deck boots for your water excursion. They are all waterproof and well-constructed. My favorite pair of boots is the XTRATUF Ankle Deck because they are stylish and super versatile. Hundreds of Amazon reviewers have the same opinion.

I like the featured boots here, all of them. The reason I am searching for boots like these to buy online is because, I want to buy my father a pair of boots that can be his protection against snake bites. We own a farm here near a river and our problem is, it looks like our farm is an ideal place for venomous Cobra snakes to stay or live in. And as we all know, their bites are deadly so I want to have my father wear a protection so in case he accidentally step on them at night, he would be safe.
In the list of boots here, which one do you think can withstand a snake bite? Is it the Servus PVC Polyblend or Xtratuf?
Hi Gomer,
Yes, of course, your father needs proper protection. These boots are mainly designed to keep your feet dry, and without a doubt will protect against snakes bites too. I live in a hot country, and in the summer, they are plenty of snakes. If we go somewhere where they are snakes, we wear high PVC boots. Anyway, if you want maximum protection, I would highly recommend the Servus PVC Polyblend because they cover your calves and a part of your legs.
I hope it helped.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.
Great list of the best waterproof deckboots around and I must say, eachnof the boots on this list are awesome in their own right. I opted in for a camping competition that would require me to get a multipurpose deckboot that is usable both in the water and on ground while maintaining a dry feet because the competition would last for a week. I think I like the best rated on the list. The Original MuckBoots Scrub Boot is very much okay for me and it ticks all the boxes and even within budget for me. Thanks so much
Hi Tracy,
Awesome!
I am glad you found a pair of boot decks for your water excursion.
You’ll be pleased with the Original MuckBoots Scrub as they truly tick all the boxes!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a nice day.
Id be doing some on boat fishing very soon. It’ll be a very great experience for me and its going ti be my first time. I’m hoping to get some really nice boots to keep dry feet and you have provided some of the best here. I particularly like the Servus PVC Polyblend Soft Toe Shrimp Boot. The only con is the big size and I have a big leg SK it’ll work perfect for me. Thanks for everything you wrote here.
Hi there,
The Servus deck boots are fantastic, these do a great job in keeping feet dry, and it’s easy to climb on the boat too.
You’ll enjoy them very much!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a nice day.
For the Original Muck Boots scrub boots, are they still warm even in the cold of the winter? Like if I was walking in the snow?
Also if I am a men’s size 11 shoe, should I get the size 11 of this boot, or is the sizing any different?
Width of the PVC polyblend soft toe boot, will these work as an overboot? Meaning can I put them over another shoe? Thanks!
Hi there
The Original Muck Boots Scrub comes only in whole sizes, so you should consider this. PVC and rubber boots have a high level of waterproofness but don’t provide much insulation. So you’ll need to wear a pair of thick socks to keep our feet warm in cold weather. I don’t think you can wear those boots over other shoes unless they are very thin. But this would make them too heavier. Anyway, I highly recommend you to go a size up if you plan on wearing thick socks.
I hope it helped.
Let me know if you need more info. I’ll be glad to assist.

Hi Danielle. I have to admit that me and decks do not get on, as a matter of fact I can’t even look at a boat without feeling sick. However, my older brother loves boats and he has a mate who has a fishing boat. I know he would love to go out with him on some of his fishing trips so I am very interested in the water proof deck boots you have reviewed. The pair I liked the best was the ‘XTRATUF Performance Men’s Full Rubber Deck Boots’. The reason I liked these was because he could also wear them in the garden. He lives i a fairly wet climatic zone so a pair like this would come in good use. Jim
Hi Jim,
The XTRATUF is a great pair of deck boots and there is no doubt your brother will love wearing them. The truth is that most of the boots you see on the article can be worn for gardening as well except those made of Neoprene material.
Let me know if you need help. I’ll be more than happy to assist!

Daniella, I love this review of the Best Deck Boots for Keeping Your Feet Warm & Dry! These boots are great for most outdoor activities requiring you to keep your feet warm and dry. I love the Xtratuf series for men and women. I only wish you could list the prices on your post so I could compare without clicking over to amazon. Otherwise, love the detail of the post and all the different options you provided for those of us looking for a great pair of angler boots. I think #6 would really help me here in Central Arkansas.
To your success,
Goldroad/Jay
Hello Jay,
Yes, I would love to show the prices so that readers don’t have to go on Amazon each time. But the problem is that prices always fluctuate on Amazon, and this could mislead the readers. The XTRATUF Legacy Neoprene is an excellent pair of deck boots. I am sure you’ll love them.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
That is really a great array of deck boots that you have chosen.
I think my favorites are the white ones because they also look stylish too.
Your boots are really well laid out and it looks like you have certainly done your research. My Step Dad is into boating and I will certainly pass this article along to him!
Thank you!
Alisha

Nice and very thorough review of best deck boots to keep your feet warm and dry I would say!
I didn’t know deck boots are so stylish nowadays. My old deck or fishing boots are very slippery while walking on deck
and they are not even warm enough. Do you have reviews of best wet suits? I will take a further look at your website and explore a little bit more. Thanks for good-looking and very informative site!
Hi Jesse,
Yes, some deck boots are very stylish, like those on the list:)
As I stated in the buying guide, most deck boots have very little if zero insulation. Their main job is to keep your feet dry and aerated. In cold weather, you will have to wear thick socks to keep your feet warm. Here is a review of the best suits for men. I hope this helped! Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day.
I am not a fisherman by any means but lately with the weather pattern being what it is, I was thinking of using my brother’s riding boots just in case. LOL. I am definitely favoring the Original MuckBoots Scrub Boot because you can use it to do so many other things. In addition to which it looks really great and comfortable and those are important aspects for any type of boot or shoe that anyone might want to wear. Especially the comfort part. I just have two questions. Do these boots come in half sizes and what’s the best way to chose your size?
Hi Vanessa,
All the boots you see in the article can be used for all sorts of activities. This is great! The best way to find the right size would be to try them on in an offline store first. But not everyone has the time to do this. So just choose the size you usually wear, and if it doesn’t fit, you can return them and buy another pair that fit. Unfortunately, the Original MuckBoots Scrub Boot doesn’t come in half sizes. But they are other great deck boots on the list that come in half size. You should take a look, I am sure you will find a great pair:)
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day
I must admit I feel really lucky to have seen this post. I have a small pig farm around my house where I rare pigs and sometimes I have problem stepping into it because I don’t have a waterproof boot. I love the suggestions you have given and I’ll love to get the Xtratuf Salmon Sisters Legacy Series 15 Women’s Fishing Boots, its fanciful and also a full boot. Super cool. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Dane,
I am glad you found your pair of deck boots:)
The Xtratuf Sister boots are stylish and can be worn for all sorts of activities. No doubt you’ll enjoy wearing them as they offer great support.
Thank you for passing by and for the comment!
This is a really amazing post. Finding quality that fits ones spec and use is rare due to the rampant sales of substantial products. An uncle of mine who is unto full time fishing is in need of a nice Boot that will protect him and make his feet dry always during work. The recommendations here are really amazing and I have seen 2 boots which I’m finding it hard to pick because of its amazing features
Hi Willy,
These deck boots are fantastic for fishing, and they are completely waterproof and antislip. Which deck boots you found hard to choose? I can help you pick the right pair.
Thank you for the comment and wish you a great day!
Hi Daniella
Life on the ocean wave needs a good pair of boots and you have chosen some of the best. I really liked the tip of buying the boots to fit with the thickest socks that you wear, but this is a problem when buying online, as you do not know how much room they have left for your toe?
When buying any shoes you tend to find that all sizes 10s are not the same, whilst some manufacturers are more generous than others. I really like my boots to be comfortable, no toe pinching or heel rubbing, to have very good grips and to be long lasting. If any of the 12 meet these criteria I will be happy. They must also be good as wellies.
Thank you for this excellent review, I really enjoy it and will look it some of these boots.
Antonio
Hi Antonio,
You are right, it’s not always easy to find the right size online, but Amazon has such an excellent return policy, which make it practical for the buyer. Every product can be returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment in the majority of cases. Anyway, I am sure you’ll find a pair of deck boots that will meet your needs with this list:). Let me know if you need help. I’ll be more than happy to assist! Thank you for passing by and wish you a fantastic day!
These are some nice suggestions of boot you have here. So many people don’t know how beneficial these boots can be sometimes. I live in an area that get water lodged when it rains and I get to dip my legs into the dirty water is sometime cause some itching and reactions to my skin from all of these, the Hodgman Neoprene Wade Shoe seem like something a lady can enjoy moving around with. I’ll look uo the price and get one for me.
Hi Dane,
Sure the Hodgman is designed for both women and man in mind. I am glad you found your pair of deck boots:)
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
I like your wide variety of recommendation. It even details the materials of the featured boots with the type of cloths and rubber. Before I proceed to the question, let me give you the situation of my husband. Well, he goes to work riding his motor bike and since our country is experiencing the rainy season, it’s expected that he would come home covered in raincoat to protect himself from getting wet. So which among your recommendations is the best choice that he can wear on travel and a few minutes of entering the premise with a strict dress code. ? Please also consider that he’s working in an office so he’s always wearing slacks and formal polo. I want to know which of those modern looking boots can go with his working ensemble. Thanks!
Hi Missus,
Well, deck boots are not really appropriate for the office. But your husband can definitely wear them on his way to work and then switch with them to a more dressy pair of shoes.
Anyway, the Grundéns Deck-Boss Ankle Boot should suit best as they are cute, and can go unnoticed almost everywhere.
I hope it helped!
Thank you for the comment and wish you a lovely day!
Hi! Yeah, there are so many different types of boots that choosing the correct one is quite challenging. But after reading your suggestions, I have realized that I need two different pairs. One would be the original MuckBoots Scrub boot and the other the Grundéns Deck-Boss Ankle Boot.
Thank you for this great list and looking to reading more in the future.
Hi Henry,
Thank you for passing by!
You’ve made a great choice; these boots are fantastic.

Wish you a nice day!
I think that these boots will also be great for the rainy weather that we have been having lately. I need some so that I can wade out to my car after a heavy storm and the water has accumulated around the car. I hate getting my shoes wet when I get into the car.
I like the boots where you can just slip your foot in without having to battle to pull them on. I would love to find a pair of boots with arch support as well as a roomy area for the toes so that your toe doesn’t touch the top or the front of the boot when walking.
Hi Michelle,
How good to see you again!
Deck boots are great for rainy days, but they don’t provide much arch support. However, you can add some for more comfort. If you don’t want your toes to touch the end of the deck boots, you might consider going a half size or full size bigger:)
Let me know if you need some info; I’ll be more than happy to help.
Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day!
As a one “Deckky” on a fishing trawler I preferred the Grundens Deck Boss boots. When you bringing the nets in you can be constantly on the move and the last thing you want is to slip over.
When working at the sorting trays you need to have a good grounding due to the boat movement and these boot always provided me with a solid footing.
Besides that, they were comfortable and it was like I never knew I had boots on.
Hi Michael,
The Grundens Deck Boss provides fantastic traction on the deck, plus the outsole is non-making. The perfect deck boots for any angling excursion! I am glad you like them!

Tha k you for the comment, and I wish you a great day.
I live in a coastal town and this information is super helpful. I don’t personally work on the docks, but I have many friends that do and a high-quality pair of deck boots is a must! Personally, when I shop for boots, I look for a pair that is versatile, so I can use it for a variety of tasks. Which of these boots do you think is best for multiple use?
Hi Alicia,
Thank you for passing by and the comment. Apart from the Hodgman Neoprene and the Softscience boots, all of them can be worn for various activities.
I hope it helped and if you have more questions, please let me know. I am always happy to assist.
Thank you for the comment, and I wish you a fantastic day.
Great post, didn’t even know that you can find so many boots on Amazon. My personal preferences would be that bots are high, so water can’t get in, must be also tight, warm, and also not be slippery on the surface. That can be very dangerous if the boot is slippery, and not comfortable enough.
Hi Ivan,
Yes, there are endless deck boots on Amazon. You just need to know what to choose:) I am sure this list of deck boots will help you find the right pair for your outdoor excursion.
Let me know if you have questions; I’ll be more than happy to assist.
Again, thank you for the comment, and I wish you a lovely day.
I am not into fishing or boating but came across deck boot when I was looking for information on how to protect my kids from cold during the peak of winter. It was snowing heavily and we had to go out, and keep appointments.
I wish I had come across this article before making my choice because I found this article informative. I didn’t find some of the brands in kids’ size.
Hi there,
You don’t have to be into fishing or boating to wear deck boots as they are suitable for all types of activities. You can even do the gardening if you want or wear them in the snow. You decide. They are many deck boots for kids. I still didn’t review them, but I will in the future. So stay tuned.
If you have any questions, please let me know. I’ll be more than happy to help.
Thank you for your comments, and I wish you a lovely day.
Daniella,
Thank you for sharing your website. I have learned so much about boating gear. I especially like your Xtratuf Salmon boots. They are exactly what I need when I am out to sea with my friend. I know they will give me the comfort, and versatility that I need. I can also wear them for gardening, boating or dancing in the rain. Another thing, they are both waterproof and lightweight, the best of both worlds.
Your website answers prayers,
Rachele
Hi Rachele,
